Amidst fears that he was losing his mind, Max Hoyland decided that, rather than burden his family, he would simply leave. Despite the family searching for him, it became clear that Max wasn’t coming back and, after he told a Salvation Army officer to pass the message on to them that he would never return, they started to move on with their lives. Max, meanwhile, was also moving on when he met April Gray in a church and moved in with her and her family in Waratah Park. However, when, shortly after Christmas, one of Max’s former neighbours, Elle Robinson, spotted him in a supermarket car park with April and her children, and told Max’s daughter-in-law, Janae, the pair came to the conclusion that he’d had a secret family all along.
