During his campaigning to become the new mayor of Erinsborough, Karl Kennedy was faced with the dirtier tactics of his rival Paul Robinson. After learning that Karl's wife Susan was suffering an MS relapse, Paul made it public knowledge, claiming that he wanted to provide better help for carers in the area. Karl was surprised to learn that his wife had been unwell, but the announcement also had the effect that many voters, including Sylvie Johns, told Karl that, although they'd like to vote for him, they felt that his time would be better spent looking after his sick wife.
