Shannon Keane Bindi Edwards
Shannon Keane 1992
Occupation: Student, Boutique Assistant
After catching student Shannon Keane trying to leave her boutique whilst still wearing one of the dresses, Gaby Willis quickly fell for the sob story that followed. Shannon explained that her parents were strict and she had a disabled brother to look after, and Gaby, whose own fiancé, Glen Donnelly, was paralysed after a fall from Lassiter’s roof, agreed to let the girl go and later made the surprising decision to give her a job as an assistant in the boutique. Over the days that followed, Shannon did her best to win the trust of her new employer. After ripping the hem of one of the dresses, Shannon decided to take it home over the weekend and fix it, so Gaby would be none the wiser. But when Gaby caught her assistant stuffing the dress into her bag, she feared the worst. Shannon quickly explained what had happened and, after Shannon then told Madge Bishop that she’d given her too much change in The Coffee Shop, Gaby decided that she could trust the girl after all.
Having finally won over Gaby, Shannon found an opportunity to rip her off. As Gaby left to meet with someone who was interested in buying some of her garments, Shannon was left alone and quickly emptied the contents of the cash register – over $500 – into her bag. Her plan to make a quick getaway was thwarted, however, when a man came in looking for a gift for his wife. As the man failed to make his mind up, Shannon asked him to leave and come back later, but Gaby returned before she had a chance to leave. Gaby happily explained that she’d won some new business and they’d given her a cash deposit for some dresses, but was shocked as she opened the till to find it empty. Shannon quickly covered, claiming that she’d left the man in the shop unattended whilst she was out the back, and he must have stolen the money. Gaby went to contact security, but returned a few minutes later to overhear Shannon on the phone, arranging to meet an accomplice in the car park. Gaby explained that the security guards already knew of Shannon, as she’d stolen from other shops in the mall, and had advised calling her parents. Gaby went on to point out to an unrepentant Shannon that she had no disabled brother and that her parents were worried sick about her. Shannon simply said that Gaby deserved everything she got for being so trusting, and, in turn, Gaby contacted the police and had her charged.
Notes: Bindi Edwards guest-starred again, twice, in 1994, in two smaller roles, as a girl named Trixie and as a hospital receptionist.
