After marrying Joan when they were only teenagers, then becoming the father to twins Susan and Rodney soon after, Geoff Langdon struggled to cope, and eventually walked out, leaving Joan to manage on their own. They saw nothing of each other - except a brief meeting at the court when they were granted a divorce after a few years - and Joan started to move on. When the twins were almost six, she became engaged to Des Clarke but, days before the wedding, Geoff arrived on her doorstep. He had done a lot of growing up and now had a farm in the country, and he explained that he wanted to apologise for his past mistakes and to perhaps become a part of the kids' lives again. Joan was very upset, reminding Geoff that he couldn't simply come back and pick up where he left off, and finally agreed that he could see the kids, but he'd have to say that he was their uncle, to avoid making them any more confused. He agreed to this, and later told Joan that he was still in love with her, but she angrily told him to leave and never come back, as she was preparing to marry Des and start a new life. But she remained confused about her feelings and when Geoff came and took the kids, while they were with the babysitter, Joan realised how desperate he was. Knowing that she didn't truly love Des, and was just looking for some stability, she decided to try again with Geoff, breaking off the engagement and moving to the country with Geoff, Susan and Rodney.
