After their father Geoff walked out on the family when they were only very young, twins Rodney and Susan Langdon grew up with just their mum, Joan. When they were nearly six, Joan met assistant bank manager Des Clarke, and he'd soon won over both her and the kids. The twins were delighted as Des brought them gifts and took them on trips to the zoo, and before long, Des and Joan were engaged, though she had admitted that she wasn't in love with him. As plans for the wedding began, Rodney and Susan even managed to win over Des's difficult mother, Eileen, and it looked like they were all going to make a happy family unit. Unfortunately for Des, that was when Geoff decided to turn up on Joan's doorstep, visiting from his farm in the country and determined to show her that he had grown up and was sorry for his past behaviour. Joan was upset, and determined not to put the kids through any further upheaval, telling Geoff that he could see them, but would have to pretend that he was an uncle. However, Geoff wasn't about to give up that easily, and came to get the children when they were with a babysitter, taking them to the park and telling them who he really was. Joan was shocked at his actions, but had come to realise that she was still in love with Geoff, and for the sake of the children, she had to give their relationship another try.
