When Paul Robinson unexpectedly announced his plans to run for Mayor of Erinsborough, he met with journalist Joe McNamara, who questioned whether the voters would accept someone with a criminal past. Paul explained that he'd been suffering from a brain tumour, which had affected his behaviour, and he hoped that people would understand and accept that. Meanwhile, Dr Karl Kennedy happened to overhear this and, already annoyed at the prospect of Paul being the new Mayor, Karl was further irritated by Paul using his brain tumour to brush off some of the things he'd done. Having been mulling over the idea for a few days, Karl then took the opportunity to tell the journalist that he was also planning to run for Major, as Paul's opposition.
