When nurse Freya Wozniak and Dr David Tanaka both found themselves deregistered from their medical careers after the death of Gareth Bateman, David faced the more serious charge of medical manslaughter and was on remand awaiting trial. With the remand centre overcrowded, David ended up in a prison, whilst on the outside, Gareth's girlfriend Emma McIver used the situation to her advantage, getting Freya involved in her criminal enterprises, explaining that she could help David, who'd been beaten up in prison, by the getting the guy to back off. When Freya told David's husband, Aaron, about what Emma had said, they realised that it was worth the risk to go along with Emma's plan, if it meant that David would be safe. When they then turned up to meet Emma, Freya was shocked to realise that she was expected to use her medical skills on a woman named Jess, who had an injury to her leg and was clearly in a lot of pain. As Emma told her to start stitching up the wound, Freya realised that she had no choice but to go along with it.
