Casey Overington 2008

When Pouch – a joey they had found by the side of the road – grew too big for their back garden, the Parker family were forced to give him to an animal park. Vet Steve Parker got in touch with his friend Casey Overington at Healesville Sanctuary and, despite the distress of Steve’s daughter Bridget, who had come to rely on spending time with Pouch as a way of coping with a car accident that had left her with walking difficulties. At the sanctuary, Bridget found it difficult to give Pouch up, despite reassurance from her family, and encouragement from Casey, who was impressed with the way Pouch would come when Bridget whistled. In the end, Bridget realised that it was better for the young kangaroo to have lots of space to run around in and, as she encouraged him out into the park, she proved that she could manage on her own too, running without the use of her walking aid.
