When Brenda Riley decided to advertise the spare room at 24 Ramsay Street, the house she was renting, in the hope of meeting some single men, her first caller was Jerry Payne, whose over-enthusiasm for everything ranging from the location of the house to the kitchen table, quickly began to irritate Brenda. And when he started talking about his love of cooking, and how he’d have to have his mum over to check the place out, she realised that he probably wasn’t the man for her.
