Cynthia Peters 2007
Occupation: Prosecuting Lawyer
With Susan Kinski due to appear in court for falling asleep at the wheel and running down Bridget Parker, her solicitor Toadie Rebecchi met with prosecuting lawyer Cynthia Peters to try to come to an arrangement about reducing the charges. As a good friend and surrogate son to Susan, Toadie was struggling with the pressure of the case and suffering from panic attacks, one of which came during the initial meeting with Susan, her husband Karl and Cynthia. Toadie was forced to leave, and quickly hid in one of the other offices, while a busy Cynthia announced that she couldn't waste any more time and left. Toadie later called her to apologise and arrange another meeting at her office, but she refused to budge and told Toadie that she would see him in court. Right up until the trial, Toadie continued to beg Cynthia to postpone proceedings, but she ignored his pleas, telling him that it was too late to change anything.
Once in court, things took a strange turn when Toadie almost didn't turn up - believing that if he failed to show, the courts would have to delay the case - but changed his mind at the last minute. He then suffered a panic attack, causing Judge Roy Evans to announce a thirty-minute recess. Things were later looking bleak for Susan, as Cynthia learnt about her history of blackouts and questioned Karl on the stand. He admitted that both he and Susan had been aware that she had been suffering tiredness and dizzy spells when she went out and drove the car on the day of the accident. With Susan desperate to be punished, she told Toadie not to cross examine any more witnesses, and the day's proceedings came to an end. However, that evening, Bridget suddenly remembered that she had fallen into the road, meaning that Susan couldn't have avoided her, so the accident wasn't her fault. With Susan, who had fainted again in court, at the hospital receiving tests, Toadie met with Cynthia and suggested changing Susan's plea to guilty, effectively ending the trial. He then asked Cynthia to put forward a non-custodial sentence - one year, suspended for three years - which Judge Evans agreed to.
