When Nick Thompson and Laura Davidson kidnapped Declan Napier, took him to a deserted caravan and started making ransom demands, his worried mother, Rebecca, refused to involve the police, but her boyfriend Paul Robinson contacted them, worried that things would spiral out of control without their involvement. However, as Nick went to collect petrol, as he prepared to collect $500,000 and hand over Declan to his mum and brother, he overheard local police officer Jack Norton question garage owner Al Raunjak about whether he’d seen two people matching Nick and Laura’s description, with a teenage boy. Realising the police were closing in, Nick headed back to the caravan and dragged Laura and Declan off to hide.
