After it emerged that Melanie Pearson had fled the UK years earlier, facing drugs charges after trying to help Krista Sinclair with her drug problem, Melanie and Krista heard that they would be interviewed to see whether they would have to be extradited to the UK. Melanie met with her lawyer, Lorraine Schmitt, who suggested that their best hope would be to gather as many positive character references as possible. Though she managed to get a few, Melanie was upset when she went to the interview the following day and Lorraine explained that Melanie's ex-husband, Toadie Rebecchi, had sent a reference but they wouldn't be using it. Melanie insisted on reading it, and was very upset to learn how little Toadie thought of her. Deciding that perhaps it wasn't worth fighting for her freedom, Melanie sacked Lorraine and announced that she'd face the interview panel alone. Meanwhile, when Toadie learnt that Melanie hadn't approached his daughter, Nell, and asked her to get her dad to write her a character reference, he realised that his anger had been misplaced and that he needed to fix things. He wrote a second, glowing reference and took it to the interview, where he was horrified to learn that Mel was representing herself. He and Lorraine quickly stopped the interview, and Toadie gave Mel the new reference, giving her hope that she could fight the problem. She asked Lorraine if she could still represent her and, later that day, learnt that she and Krista would not be extradited to the UK.
