After several months of attempts to get pregnant, and a failed plan to adopt, Max and Steph Hoyland were almost giving up hope when she learnt that she was expecting a baby. During her first ultrasound, and, after Max had made a joke about mistaking the umbilical cord for… something else, nurse Karen Smallwood asked them if they would like to know the gender of their baby. After much deliberation, they decided to wait until the birth.
