Teacher, Grace Smith, was a proud and strong woman who enjoyed a reputation of being able to cope with anything. She had three daughters Liz, Carmel and Susan who, aside from the occasional argument, were all very close. Sadly the family was rocked when Grace became seriously ill and Liz decided to move away. Susan resented the timing of Liz’s decision for many years afterwards. The illness became protracted and by the end Grace was in a lot of pain. She eventually asked Susan to help her to die and made her promise never to tell anyone else. Although Susan was still just a teenager, Grace asked her because she didn’t think anyone else would be strong enough to help her or to forgive her. She died in 1973.
