After getting a job in housekeeping at Lassiter's Hotel, Rhiannon Bates was asked to cover a shift at the last-minute and, not wanting to turn it down for fear of losing her job, she decided that she'd have to take her young son, Jackson to work with her. Though her boyfriend Mason, who also worked at the hotel, advised against it, Rhiannon took Jackson to the hotel rooms as she cleaned them, and the boy was forced to hide in the bathroom when Rhiannon's supervisor Veronika Stephens came by. After almost being caught, Rhiannon decided that it would be safer to leave Jackson in the staff room, until later, Veronika tracked her down and said that there was a young boy downstairs asking after her. Veronika acted like she was sympathetic to Rhiannon's situation, but later, social worker Cindy Tebbell, from the Department of Human Services, visited Rhiannon with some questions about Jackson. After questioning both Rhiannon and Jackson, Cindy was satisfied that everything was in order, but Rhiannon was furious that someone had reported her and at first suspected that Mason's father Matt had made the complaint - but Mason did some asking around at the hotel, and told Rhiannon that it was Veronika.
