A police sergeant in Port Douglas, Queensland, Bryce Unwin became embroiled in the family problems of Kate Ramsay, when her uncle Paul Robinson arrived in town looking for her. With Kate's younger sister Sophie about to be taken into care, Paul had only a few days to find his niece, and became frustrated, and insulting, when Bryce refused to cooperate. However, later on, Paul's wallet went missing and he was forced to call on the police for help, with his earlier insults thrown back in his face. As Paul eventually found Kate and failed to grab her attention as she left on a boat excursion, he impulsively attempted to steal a motorboat, drawing attention from locals and eventually being dragged out onto the jetty and taken back to the police station. Bryce gave him back his wallet - which had been found under his chair at the bar - and told him he wouldn't press any charges over the boat incident, but Paul had to leave town and return to Melbourne immediately.
