As Lance Wilkinson started to develop a problem with gambling, he began using his friend Toadie’s telephone gambling account. When Toadie rang up to check his account one day, he realised that he was $30 down and confronted Lance, who apologised but tried to reason that everyone had the occasional loss. Toadie was appalled with the deception, while Lance was forced to find a new outlet for his addiction when Toadie closed his account. Though he was underage, Lance decided to risk using the TAB and, after narrowly avoiding being spotted by his stepfather Phil Martin, he went inside and suspicious cashier Cherie Wilson immediately asked for ID. Panicking, Lance lied that he’d left his wallet at home and quickly left.
