Brother to Eileen Clarke née Winston, Bob lived in Bega, New South Wales. In early 1987, Bob's nephew Des Clarke had been getting pestered with letters and phone calls from his ex-fiancée Lorraine Kingham, even though he was married and expecting his first child. Des' wife Daphne became suspicious about the phone calls but Des said they must have been his mother Eileen as she was away visiting Uncle Bob. However, when Eileen did phone, she told Daphne that she and Bob had been at an agricultural show all day, so Daphne knew she couldn't have made the previous call that day. Des later explained that he'd only met Lorraine to give her some financial advice and she'd got carried away.
