Smugglers 1985
Employees: Jack the barman
A pirate-themed pub restaurant, in the basement of the Yard Arm pub, that became the setting for a love triangle involving Max Ramsay, Jim Robinson and Amy Medway
for a couple of weeks in 1985. Jim and Max were both regulars at Smugglers, and the Yard Arm pub, and knew Jack the barman very well.
When Max Ramsay received a letter from old schoolfriend Amy Medway, he called her and they arranged a date at Smugglers’, a pub and restaurant.
Expecting a woman in a red silk dress, Max was alarmed when a rather large woman appeared dressed in red, and promptly ran out of the bar, only for Amy, looking stunning, to arrive soon after. Jack the barman informed Amy that Max
had been and gone, so she called him, and he quickly lied that he was leaving to go overseas, and the date was cancelled. A few days later, Max was in there with his friend Jim Robinson when Jack told him about the beautiful woman who’d
been asking after him. Realising the mix-up, Max called Amy, but this time, she hung up on him.
Jim, who had attended school with Max and Amy, offered to make the call instead, and, the next day, he and Amy met at Smugglers’ and before long were getting
on extremely well. After a few days, Amy had to head home to England, so she and Jim had one final dinner at Smugglers’ before he took her to the airport. During their final meal, Max turned up, shocked to see how beautiful Amy was now
and furious that Jim had once again messed up his life.
This was also the location for a date between Paul Robinson and Gloria Slater, as well as dinner between Paul and Terry Inglis, who he would later go on to marry, where she spotted her boyfriend Shane Ramsay with another girl, and wrongly assumed
he was cheating on her. Des Clarke also went on a date here, with Joan Langdon, who he later was engaged to, until she left him for her ex-husband.
