Another week with only four episodes, but the drama came thick and fast as health and love problems burdened the neighbours…

Sindi thought she’d found a way to raise the $50,000 for Stuart’s eye operation this week, but it involved an element of deception. Only telling Carmella where she was going, Sindi snuck off to see Gary Evans, one of the regulars at the club where she’d been a dancer. He had offered to pay her a considerable sum for one night with her and, because of the guilt she was suffering over Stu’s condition, she believed that there was no other option. Her nerves almost got the better of her, but she decided to go through with the plan but, as she dropped her purse in the bathroom, she picked up a coin, which gave her another idea. Meanwhile, Stu had rumbled Carmella’s terrible lying and, along with Toadie, set out to the hotel to confront Sindi. Having managed to convince Gary to flip a coin – with her either sleeping with him, or giving her the money – Sindi won and left the room, only to be confronted by her boyfriend. An irate Stuart refused to listen to any of her explanations and Sindi, feeling terrible, gave the cheque to Harold to give to charity. Only hours later, Stu had a change of heart and realised that it was worth ignoring his principles if he could see again, but it was too late. Liljana noticed how desperate the pair were and spoke to Paul about the Helen Daniels Trust donating the money. It seemed that Paul was harbouring a certain amount of guilt over Stu’s injuries, as he didn’t take much convincing. Stu and Sindi were thrilled to learn that he could have the operation, but a visit to Karl quickly brought them back down to earth, as he told Stu that failure in the procedure would lead to him never having any chance of seeing again. The writers cleverly tied in the Bishops’ marital problems with Stuart’s operation storyline this week and, of course, Paul’s willingness to help another virtual stranger in Ramsay Street also managed to raise more questions than it solved…

Boyd finally came to his senses this week and stopped using the hgh. His boss, Krystal, was unimpressed and warned him that he didn’t stand a chance in the bodybuilding contest without them. Her reaction was enough for Boyd to decide that he’d had enough and quit his job. Back at home, Steph and Sky were delighted to hear the news, with Boyd even considering returning to school after his failed venture into the world of employment. To celebrate, Steph agreed that Boyd could have a glass of wine with dinner, but was annoyed when she found him collapsed and slurring his words on the couch. Although she believed that he was drunk, he insisted that he’d barely touched the wine and it must simply have been the hgh working its way out of his system. Steph wasn’t convinced, especially when Boyd asked her not to tell Max, but she agreed, on the condition that Boyd return to school straightaway. He was soon paired up with Serena for a school debate and she began to notice some odd behaviour, with Boyd repeating himself and completely changing topic mid-sentence. All was forgiven, however, during the debate when Boyd stood up and made a moving speech on the value of love over money. Although everyone was very proud of him, Boyd was left confused, unable to remember what he’d said. Kyal Marsh has been slowly but surely getting to grips with the challenging material he’s currently receiving and his performances, along with very few clues as to what’s really wrong with Boyd, are making this story a joy to watch.

Paul was at the centre of more than one story this week, as his deception and manipulation continued. With Liljana having serious doubts about her future with David, Paul managed to manipulate the situation when he turned up at Serena’s school debate, knowing that David was busy playing golf with his new associate, Ronnie Sharp. As David rushed home to announce that Ronnie had offered him a job, Lil finally realised that she’d had enough and announced to her husband that she wanted a trial separation. Paul was quick to lend his support to Lil, offering to pay for a room at Lassiter’s and listening to her problems. Meanwhile, Izzy was desperate to find some information on Paul, to prevent him from blackmailing her over the true parentage of her baby. Although she had several inklings, it wasn’t until Connor mentioned the metal button found under Gus’ body, then her discovery of some gloves in Paul’s wardrobe with the button missing, that she realised exactly what she was dealing with.

Toadie and Lyn were both coming to terms with new love in their lives this week. Having pushed Eva away, due to the fact that she wasn’t exactly his usual skinny type, Toadie began to realise how shallow he was being. He decided that Eva was perfect for him and he should put his prejudices aside and be proud to be her boyfriend. Elsewhere, Lyn was struggling to deal with her relationship with the recently separated Andy. Her shame only deepened when Andy’s wife, Sandy, spray-painted the street with allegations that Lyn was a marriage wrecker. However, reassurances from her friends, as well as from Andy and Steph, made her put her own happiness first for a change and she happily held hands with her younger man in front of the gossips.

Finally this week, Summer realised that her new friendship with Penny was more important than her old one with Lisa. She stood up to Lisa and told her that Penny was far cooler than she would ever be. Carmella struggled to cope with her issues and a counselling session did little to help, as she stormed out of the room. And Karl was out of hospital but he also looked like having a long recovery. Despite the rallying of all of his friends, it looked like it would be a while before he completely came to terms with his brush with death.

Notes: Scenes involving the actual bet made by Sindi were edited out in the BBC broadcast, leaving viewers slightly unclear as to what exactly had taken place when a triumphant Sindi appeared with the cheque.
