Izzy’s drug problem continued to cause headaches for her friends and family, as Janae wreaked the ultimate revenge on Karl…

Janae’s problems, particularly her dependency on Karl, came to a head this week as he was forced to reject her once again. As Karl, realising that things were getting out of control, explained to Janae that she’d have to start seeing another counsellor, she didn’t really get the point and decided that they could still be friends. After becoming vice captain of the school basketball team, Janae invited Karl to watch her play and was devastated when he didn’t turn up. So distracted was Janae that she ended up missing a vital goal and ran off in stairs, just as Karl arrived to try and explain things to her. After witnessing an emotional exchange between Karl and her daughter, Janelle demanded to know what was going on, but a tearful Janae left her mother with the feeling that things had gone a lot further than simple friendship. Following this, Janae ran away from home and Janelle was left with their vague evidence, not to mention some damning comments in her daughter’s diary, to draw her own conclusions and confront Karl. Despite the efforts of Stingray and Susan to calm the situation, Janelle was determined to make Karl pay. Later, Susan reminded her ex-husband that she had warned him that he was getting too close to Janae and, the next day, she was forced to tell him to clear out his office and leave the school premises. And so, after many weeks, the slow-burning Janae/Karl story has finally reached a huge turning point. It’s because Janae has been seeing Karl for so long, and her problems are so obvious to everyone but her mother, that this story is really working. It’s also nice to see this familiar soap story handled with two of the regular cast, rather than some random kid who’s been brought in for the purpose of messing Karl’s life up, then is never seen again. Hopefully, we will see Janae change and get over her problems in the coming months.

As Izzy continued to battle with her addiction to prescription drugs these week, her behaviour became more and more erratic. Desperate to find something to distract his troubled housemate, Paul roped in Ned Parker to do some odd jobs around the house, encouraging him to parade around the house with his shirt off. It failed to have the desired effect and, before long, Izzy was arguing with Max, who was desperate to buy her out of the bar and get her out of his life. In the moments following their argument, Izzy pushed Steph out of the way, causing her to fall onto the hard edge of the bar and require a check-up at the hospital. Although Steph and the baby were both found to be fine, Izzy felt terrible. After a night out partying, Izzy was in for a big shock when a man named Dennis turned up at number 22 to finalise the deal for him to buy her out of the Scarlet Bar. He claimed to have given her a $1000 cheque as a deposit, but she had no recollection of Dennis or the cheque. As Paul attempted to sort things out, he soon got to the root of the problem when he found a bottle of pills in Izzy’s bag. Unfortunately, Izzy didn’t take too kindly to being found out and rejected Paul’s attempts to help her. Desperate to get more pills, Izzy went to the hospital, where she was caught eyeing up the drugs trolley by shifty nurse Gareth. Before long, he was supplying her with a sample of the drugs he could get for her, and spending the night at number 22, albeit in the spare room. Later that day, as Gareth and Izzy attempted to do a bigger deal in the Scarlet Bar, they were sprung by Stuart, who’d been following Gareth around all day, and arrested.

Elsewhere, when Serena realised that her parents were trying to talk Connor into convincing her to give up on the bikini shop and go to uni, she decided to have a little fun. She arranged a meeting with her parents, and announced that she’d finally realised what was important, and was looking forward to getting married and starting a family with Connor. Although she later came clean, by the end of the week Serena was causing more headaches when she received a cheque from Svetlanka for $20,000. Although her parents hoped that she would put it towards gaining a degree, she announced that she was going to use it to buy into the bikini shop. As relations broke down between Serena and her dad, she suddenly announced that if he couldn’t accept her decision, she’d leave home and move into number 30. Meanwhile, Sky was in for a surprise when she caught Dylan busy training with Boyd at number 30 and found out about the proposed fight with Mike Pill. However, as neither party looked set to abandon their principles, Sky surprised Dylan, and herself, by backing down and finally learning to compromise.

It seemed that moving into number 30 was having a strange effect on Lou this week, as he took to wearing a baseball cap, playing loud rock music and referring to the General Store as The GS. Things only got worse as he found himself in a bet with Connor and Toadie over who could make the mild-mannered Ned angry the quickest. But as they tried letting out the air in his bed and spraying him with water, it looked like they’d need to do a lot more to rile their unflappable new housemate. And the war between Paul and… the rest of the street, continued, as the Bishops fought back against his plans to build an extra storey on top of number 22. In an attempt to annoy him, Harold and David took to practising tuba on the balcony in the mornings. Paul attempted to get revenge by telling them that the number of tables outside the store would have to be reduced as they were taking up too much space, but David assured him that they’d measured and were within their boundaries. But Paul once again had the last laugh when, despite David’s efforts, planning permission to build on number 22 was granted by the council.

Also this week, Ned’s tough love tactics seemed to have an effect on Stuart, who realised that he had a lot of people around him who cared, and he started to move on from his problems with Sindi. Joe was alarmed to realise that Bouncer 5 wasn’t exactly ready for racing and attempted to get the dog out of its depression, whilst the mystery of Izzy’s missing $1000 cheque was solved when Bree, Rachel and Zeke found it at Lassiter’s and decided to keep it.
