A Russian internet bride, Rove McManus and a mysterious collapsing set of shelves. Just your average week in Erinsborough…

Lou was in for a shock as he learnt that Mishka was on her way over from Russia. He admitted to Sky and Harold that he’d told a few lies about his financial situation and had sent a photo of himself from a few decades ago. After a disastrous experiment with hair dye to make himself look younger, Lou realised that he’d just have to be honest about his age, but still tried to get Harold to help him pretend that he at least part-owned the house they lived in. All of Lou’s efforts seemed to be in vain however, when Mishka failed to show up at the airport the next morning. By that evening, Lou had resigned himself to the fact that he would be alone for the rest of his life when there was a knock at the door. It was Mishka, who explained that she had missed her earlier flight in Singapore because she’d gone to the beauty parlour. Lou quickly realised that he wasn’t the only one to have used an old photograph of himself and, before long, Mishka was settling in nicely, cooking up a delightful meal of cabbage and salami for the new man in her life. The next morning, Mishka admitted to Lou that it had always been her dream to live in Australia and meet Shane Warne. Lou and Harold then took her to Healsville Wildlife Sanctuary for a day out, where she marvelled at the wallabies and suggested taking one home. When Harold explained that it was against the law to own a native animal, Mishka was amazed and admitted that, in Russia, anyone could have anything, for a price. Although she struggled to get used to Vegemite and the Australian tea, Mishka admitted that, by being in the ‘land of Warney’, all of her dreams had come true. Although the character of Mishka could have been a disaster, Deborah Kennedy brings such warmth to the role that, even with a slightly ropey accent, she’s the most endearing addition to Ramsay Street in a long time.

As publicity for her novel, The Bogan’s Tipped Hair, started this week, Janelle was also fulfilling a dream as she was invited to appear on Rove Live. After asking Harold to help her out with a practice interview, she agreed to take Bree with her – the fact that she wasn’t her biological daughter never far from her mind. Once at the studios, Janelle started to panic about not having enough amusing anecdotes to tell Rove and, when she was finally sitting on the sofas being interviewed, her nerves got the better of her. She then suddenly announced that she hadn’t written the best-selling novel and pointed to Bree in the audience. Bree was brought down to the stage by Rove, who asked her if what her mother was saying was true. Although Bree tried to deny it, Janelle said that it was true and, by the next day, the revelations had caused sales of The Bogan’s Tipped Hair to go through the roof.

Robert continued his plot to pick off Paul’s loved ones, one by one, this week, and his first target was Dylan. After staging a robbery and a food poisoning outbreak, Paul’s doubts about his young protégé were already growing, and it took just one more evil action to finish Dylan off for good. When some new shelves for the store needed to be put together, Dylan quickly volunteered, hoping to win back some of Paul’s trust, but as soon as Dylan’s back was turned, Robert took the opportunity to remove a couple of the screws. Later that day, as Elle started putting products on the shelves, they fell forward, knocking her out and narrowly missing baby Charlie, who was in his carry cot on the floor nearby. When Paul found out that Dylan had been distracted by problems with Sky, who had called by the store earlier that day, it was the final straw and he sacked him. Robert was delighted with the outcome, though Izzy once again spotted him smirking and began to have her suspicions. And it looked like Izzy was about to become the next victim of Robert’s campaign, as, having already cut out Dylan from a photo which also featured Paul, Elle and Izzy, he set about cutting out his father’s girlfriend…

Robert’s relationship with Katya, meanwhile, was developing. During their second date, at the Scarlet Bar, Robert was embarrassed when one of the hotel receptionists came in and asked if he still needed the keys to the presidential suite. Katya overheard and quickly walked out on him and he was forced to spend the night in his car to save face. The next morning, he told his father, who already knew that the suite hadn’t been used, that he’d spent the night at Katya’s place, while admitting to the girl herself that he was quite inexperienced with women, but he (or rather, Cameron) had something of a reputation as a womaniser. Katya admitted that she wasn’t that experienced either and was grateful for his honesty. Meanwhile, Zeke was finding himself in more and more trouble at school, caught scribbling on lockers and desks, and even beginning a fight with another kid who called Bree a loser. Susan spoke to Katya about her concerns for Rachel and Zeke, and made it clear that she could always turn to her if she was finding it difficult to cope. It later became clear that Zeke’s behaviour wasn’t simply random acts of rebellion, but attempts to defend Bree by scribbling out the nasty things that other students had been writing about her. Rachel, meanwhile, was growing concerned for Stingray, who seemed to be drinking when he was on his own and during breakfast. The final straw came when she found him sitting alone in the park with a bottle of beer and he attempted to hide it from her, so she came out and asked him if he had a problem with alcohol…

Lyn continued with her quest to have Charlie baptised this week, despite warnings from Max and Steph to drop the subject, as they would be having a naming day, with Karl and Susan as his life mentors. After arranging to baby-sit her grandson, Lyn dressed him in a Christening gown and was set to take him to be baptised when Susan realised what was going on. Although Janae overheard the conversation and warned the Hoylands, Lyn had already come to her senses. She admitted that she’d asked the priest to simply say a prayer for Charlie, but Steph was horrified and warned her mother that she’d gone too far this time. Meanwhile, Paul noticed the tool belt that Steph had adapted to carry all of her baby paraphernalia and was impressed with the design. He mentioned it to Lyn and said that they could easily make some money from the idea. When Lyn went to mention it to Steph, she was met with an icy response and Steph was left feeling guilty as her mother walked out, saying that she was only trying to help and wouldn’t sit around and be insulted by her own daughter.

Finally this week, during dinner with Harold, Susan finally opened up about her grief over Alex’s death and realised that it was Rachel and Zeke who had been helping her to cope. She admitted that, without them around, her life was empty and she was struggling with her feelings. Ned’s attempts to be nasty continued as he dished out the parking tickets to anyone and everyone, before stealing Connor’s ladder and leaving him stranded as he fixed a camera to the roof of the Scarlet Bar. Ned did do one good deed, however, as he agreed to accompany Janae to her school ball, making Boyd jealous in the process. Believing that his ex was happily moving on, Boyd agreed to go to the uni medical ball with Sasha.

Notes: Earlier this year, it was announced that, in the ten-week build-up to episode 5000, the writers would be slipping the episode block number (a block being a set of 5 episodes) into the scripts each week, starting with Block 990 this week. The number 990 appeared on Monday’s episode, in which Lou received an email to say that Mishka would be arriving on Flight 990.
