It was season finale time once again, and Toadie’s turn to be at the centre of the action…

When Katya popped over to number 32 on the afternoon of Christmas Day, intending to wish Ned season’s greetings before heading off to Shepparton with the rest of the family, it was a decision that would have dire consequences for several people. Guy had been watching Ramsay Street and, determined to get the money that Katya owed him, was biding his time until he confronted her. Seeing her head into number 32, he followed and threatened Katya and Steph with a gun, but they weren’t the only ones in the house, as Charlie was asleep in the bedroom and Toadie was in the shower. And when Zeke then turned up looking for his sister, Guy was left holding the five of them hostage. The situation grew increasingly tense, until Zeke finally saw his moment and hit Guy over the head, knocking him out briefly. Toadie managed to hold him down as everyone else escaped, but as he tried to get out to safety, Guy woke up and fired the gun, hitting Toadie’s spine with the bullet. At the hospital, Steph kept a vigil as Toadie went into surgery and, although it looked like he wouldn’t make it, thoughts of her helped him to pull through. A strong season finale was made so much better by the wonderful acting from Carla Bonner in Thursday’s 2007 season premiere – she did a beautiful job of portraying the emotions that Steph would have been experiencing.

Following the siege, Guy was arrested and Katya was subjected to an outburst from an emotional Steph, telling her to get out of Erinsborough as she had caused nothing but trouble since she arrived. Those words hit Katya hard and she decided to leave, but was caught packing in the middle of the night by Zeke, who told her not to run away, reminding her that their father always used to tell them that things would look better in the morning. But Katya’s promise to Zeke clearly meant very little, as the next morning he found a note from her, explaining that she had gone, skipping bail. Realising that there were only a few days before she had to report to the police, Susan, Karl and Zeke realised that they had to find her without involving the authorities.

Elsewhere in Ramsay Street, Rosie was troubled to learn about Paul and Lyn splitting up before their wedding day was over, and blamed herself for the whole mess. When Paul later found her working at the office on Christmas Day, she told him all about her ridiculous bet to lose her virginity by midnight that day, and Paul pointed out that it was only 8pm. However, their passionate moment was interrupted by Frazer, who had responded badly when Rosie had tried to seduce him earlier that day, worried that if they got too close, she’d find out the truth about him. And with two men fighting over her, Rosie was left more confused than ever. Carmella and Will, meanwhile, were taking things to the next level, as she finally broke her vow of celibacy, ensuring that she could never return to her old life as a nun. And Pepper was in for a massive shock when she attempted to reunite her parents for Christmas. After Allan proposed to Chris, she finally admitted that they couldn’t get back together, because she was with someone else – her housemate, Carol. Though Allan put on a brave face, Pepper was horrified and accused her mum of being a liar, telling her that she wanted nothing more to do with her.

With relationship chaos and a shooting in Ramsay Street, some light relief came as Janelle decided to hold a Christmas barbecue for the residents of the cul-de-sac. After receiving a letter from Kim telling her that he wouldn’t be coming back, and learning about the very final ending to the Steigers’ marriage, Janelle, with some encouragement from Janae, also decided to ask Allan out, only to be told that perhaps they both needed some more time before they thought about seeing other people.

Bree was taken aback when Zeke presented her with a Christmas gift – a kitten named Willow, little realising that she had a strong hatred for cats. Unfortunately though, she opted to pretend that she loved Willow whenever Zeke was around, after the pair promised each other that they would never fight again. Janae was also in for a surprise when, as she and Harold cleaned up number 32 after the siege, he found a card, hidden inside a book, to Boyd, from Glenn. Devastated as she realised that Glenn didn’t even know of her existence, Janae took Boyd’s phone from him and phoned ‘the other woman’ letting her know, in no uncertain terms, that Boyd was taken. She then went and had a heart to heart with Bree, who reminded her that sometimes she would have to be the bigger person and forgive him, if her marriage was going to survive. Boyd, meanwhile, was on the phone to Glenn, apologising for Janae’s outburst and chatting about her plans for the Christmas holidays…

After all that, the biggest surprise was saved for the final scene of the week, as Elle returned to Erinsborough from Tasmania, admitting that it was her home now and she couldn’t stay away. But as she left a shopping mall, ready to head back to Ramsay Street, who should she spot loading up his car with groceries but Max…
