Magic Moments > 2008 > Janae's Departure Episode 5385

Written by Sarah Mayberry, Directed by Gary Conway, Produced by Peter Dodds

Channel Ten: 08/02/08, Five: 29/04/08

Taylah reminds Rachel that Susan and Karl are just thinking about what’s best for her, but Rachel thinks they’re treating her like a child. Zeke, Bridget, Declan and Ringo turn up to see Rachel, much to her horror. Janae breaks the news to Ned that she’s leaving Ramsay Street.

At number 26, Ned can’t believe what he’s hearing and tries to convince Janae to stay so that they can work things out. Janae explains that she has to do this, for Mickey’s sake, but Ned doesn’t understand how her leaving is going to help anyone. He then tells her to go, if that’s what she really wants, and starts to cry as she walks out the door.

..

At the Jordan house, Rachel is furious with Taylah for getting in touch with Zeke and the others, but Zeke stops her from ranting and tells her to sit down, as she needs to listen to what he has to say. Rachel is quite taken aback by Zeke’s tone, and sits down.

At number 32, Janae is on the phone, booking her flight to Cairns, when Toadie and Steph join her, checking that she’s absolutely certain about what she’s doing. She admits that she just wants to get it done now, before Mickey gets too emotionally attached, but she hasn’t told him yet. Toadie tells her that she’s going to have to say goodbye to everyone in the street, or there’ll be a lynch mob. Steph and Toadie offer a hug to Janae, who still isn’t sure she’s doing the right thing.

..

Back in Taylah’s bedroom, Zeke is furious with Rachel for the way she got so angry with Didge and Taylah, pointing out that they’ve only tried to help and protect her. Rachel says that Taylah promised not to get in touch with him, but Zeke reminds her that she can’t really talk about broken promises, since she’s been lying to and deceiving everyone lately. She claims that this is different, but Zeke angrily asks why she’s so special? He says that her friends are all there for her – but Angus isn’t. Just then, the phone rings and they both look worried…

At number 28, Susan tells Karl that Zeke isn’t answering his phone.

..

Zeke rejects the call and a relieved Rachel thanks him for being such a good brother. Zeke realises that he might be a good brother, but what he’s just done makes him a terrible son.

Susan hangs up the phone, worried about why Zeke isn’t answering. Karl insists that Zeke would have told them if he’d found Rachel, but Susan isn’t so sure, pointing out that, after recent events, they can’t take anything for granted where the kids are concerned.

..

Zeke asks Rachel where she’ll go if she doesn’t return to Ramsay Street. She says that she can go to Adelaide and stay with Katya – before asking Zeke if he has any money for the bus fare. Zeke is furious that she’d just give up her entire life for one stupid mistake – but she says that she can’t stick around, knowing that Angus is so close by and he hates her. Zeke notices how much Rachel is hurting, but keeps his mouth shut.

At Carmella’s flat, Rebecca is preparing tea and cake, but Carmella is distracted by thoughts of Marco. Rebecca sits her down and explains that she had similar feelings when Declan was born – feeling unworthy of her own child because she’d already given Oliver up. Carmella thinks that’s ridiculous, pointing out that if one person deserves some happiness, it’s Rebecca. Carmella then starts wondering if she alone is enough for Chloe, and Rebecca says that, if she’s unhappy, then Chloe will pick up on it.

..

At number 26, Ned has made porridge, but Mickey says that he wants toast. Ned snaps at him that he’ll have what he’s given, and Mickey runs off, with Ned apologising after him. Steve then comes in, and Ned explains that Janae’s leaving, as she needs to be with her family. Though Steve feels bad for Ned and Mickey, he thinks that Janae’s also had a lot to deal with, and she’s probably made the right decision where Mickey’s concerned.

At number 32, Janae is preparing to leave and realises that she still has some stuff at the Parker house, which she needs to box up to be sent on. Steph says that she’ll sort it out, and Janae thanks her for her support over the years, particularly during her problems with Boyd. Steph, in turn, says that Janae helped her during her problems with Max, and she’s the gutsiest chick she knows. They share a hug, and Janae tearfully realises that she still needs to talk to Mickey – who then turns up and asks Janae if it’s true that she’s leaving?

..

A little while later, Janae and Mickey are sitting on the couch – she tells him that she loves him and his dad very much, but this is a complicated adult situation. Mickey is confused, so Janae tells him that it’s like that story she read to him about the King and Queen and the Dragon – the Queen needs to go to the mountains for a while to make sure that the Prince is safe. Mickey asks if the Queen ever comes back, and Janae admits that she hasn’t worked that part out yet.

Outside, Janae is putting her bags into the car, just as, next door, Daniel is unloading boxes and moving into number 30. Karl and Susan come to say their goodbyes, and Susan says that she’s one of the brightest girls she ever had the privilege to teach. Steve then says his farewell to Janae and she wishes him luck at the auction, telling him to look after Ned. Lou and Harold admit that it’s very sad seeing the last of the Timminses leave the street, and Janae wonders why Ned hasn’t come to say goodbye. She’s just getting into the car, when she stops and runs over to number 26.

..

..

In the kitchen of number 26, Ned is washing up and Janae walks in, asking why he didn’t come over to say goodbye. He refuses to turn and look at her, so she simply tells him that she had the best time of her life with him – he taught her a lot of loving and being loved, and she had the privilege of being a part of Mickey’s love. She says that, although it may not seem that way, she does love him. After she leaves, Ned looks around with tears in his eyes.

At the Jordan house, Zeke and Ringo bring some food in for Rachel, but she’s still in no mood to talk. Ringo says that he knows how she feels – from his experiences with Carmella – but Rachel thinks it’s different, and her parents are now ashamed of her, plus Angus hates her. Zeke then suddenly blurts out that Angus lied, and he is in love with her…

..

Cathy is in one of the sheds doing some work when Marco comes in and announces that he’s going to accept her 12-month contract. She says that he doesn’t seem too pleased about it, and tells him that he needs to think very carefully and be absolutely certain of his actions before he signs anything.

At Carmella’s flat, Rebecca announces that she’s fulfilled her ‘stickybeak quota’ for the day and heads out but, as she goes, she tries again to convince Carmella to call Marco. Moments later, Carmella’s phone rings and she’s thrilled to see that it’s Marco calling. She answers and says that she was just thinking about him, after seeing him, and everyone else, on the video that Harold and Lou made. They both sit down and settle in for a long chat…

..

Back at the Jordan house, Zeke has finished explaining to Rachel that Susan went to see Angus and asked him to lie. Rachel is horrified and, even though Zeke begs her not to blame Susan, as she was only doing it for Rachel’s sake, she announces that there’s no way she’s ever returning home now.

..

..

At the airport, Janae has checked in and confirmed her window seat and Steph and Toadie prepare to say goodbye. She hugs them both and thanks them for everything, and is just about to walk away when Ned and Mickey come running in. Janae kisses Ned and tells him how much she loves him, before going over to say goodbye to Mickey. He explains that he’s come up with an ending to the fairytale – the prince grows up and rides his horse up to the mountains, then brings the queen back to the castle. Janae, with tears in her eyes, tells him that it sounds like the best ending ever, before sharing another kiss with Ned, which ends abruptly when Mickey tells them that people are staring. She says and final goodbye and walks away, as teary Ned and Mickey watch.
