Bronte 2008-2009

When Nicola West spotted a stray dog, she saw it as a chance to get closer to her brother-in-law, vet Steve Parker. The pair went out searching for the animal and found her in the local park. Nicola named her Bronte and she was taken back to Steve's clinic, where Nicola helped to nurse her back to full health, before bringing her home to 30 Ramsay Street, where she was living after falling out with her family. As her personal problems got worse, Nicola decided to leave town, taking Bronte with her, but when they stopped in a layby, Bronte ran off, and both she and Nicola ended up being run down in a hit-and-run accident. Though Bronte quickly recovered, Nicola remained in a coma for several days, eventually waking and claiming to have amnesia, hoping it would put all her past problems behind her. Her mental state deteriorating, Nicola then poisoned some lasagne for Steve, leaving him seriously ill. But as her secret was exposed, she returned to the street looking for Bronte, planning to flee for good, only to find that her sister, Miranda had the dog, lying that she'd fed some of the lasagne to her. As Miranda finally realised what her sister was capable of, Nicola tried to run off, to find the police waiting outside and, after psychiatric assessment, she was taken to a secure unit. Miranda, despite not wanting the reminder around, agreed that Bronte could stay on at the Parker house.
