After learning that they would be interviewed by the Australian police to decide if they’d have to be extradited to the UK to face decade-old drugs charges, Melanie Pearson and Krista Sinclair gathered character references. Mistakenly believing that she’d approached his daughter Nell about getting him to write her a reference, Mel’s ex-husband Toadie wrote a scathing reference, leaving her devastated and deciding to sack lawyer Lorraine Schmitt and represent herself. As head interviewer Matthew Childs fired questions at her, Melanie became flustered, getting her facts wrong. Meanwhile, Toadie had learnt that Mel hadn’t approached Nell and his anger had been misplaced, so he wrote a new, glowing reference and took it to the interview. He and Lorraine then managed to get Matthew to pause proceedings while they showed Mel the new reference. She decided that she wanted to fight for her freedom, asking Lorraine to represent her again.

Shortly afterwards, Krista went in for her interview, making it very clear that Melanie had only ever been at the drug deal to try and protect her. She explained that she’d forced Mel to lie that the drugs were hers to protect her and her family’s reputation, and that nothing that had happened was Mel’s fault. Later that day, word came through that Melanie and Krista would not be extradited to the UK.
