When pensioner Norm Hastings brought his dog, Digger, to see vet Steve Parker, Steve and his son Riley quickly realised that the man’s companion was seriously ill and would require an operation. Knowing that Norm wouldn’t be able to afford it, Riley – who had just given up a degree in veterinary science to become a journalist – decided that he’d do the operation on the quiet and for free, unable to watch an animal suffering when it didn’t need to be.
