Following the death of his Aunt Rosemary, Paul Robinson decided to fly out to New York in order to attend the funeral and then spend some time with family there. After receiving approval from Lassiters' executive consultant Krista Sinclair, Paul appointed Brett Heade as the hotel's temporary manager. Though Krista seemed to be getting on well with him, receptionist Holly Hoyland was left unimpressed when Brett disappeared to the golf course for the day, claiming that it was for a business meeting.

As more and more of the Lassiters staff spoke about how useless Brett was at his job, and how he was hardly ever around, Nicolette Stone approached him about holding a charity furniture sale in the grounds of the hotel. Brett was reluctant, but as Nicolette refused to leave him alone until he agreed, he approved the sale and agreed to close off part of the car park the following day. When Krista then saw the sale taking place, she pointed out to Brett that he didn't get any permits for it and that they needed the parking space for a major event that day. After trying to blame other staff members, Brett was forced to text Nicolette and tell her to shut it all down, as which point she confronted him, asking if they could have just one more hour of selling, and leaving Krista to sort out Brett's mess again.

The next mistake that Brett made was even bigger, as he double booked two large groups, causing a fight to break out in reception. Krista was called in to fix the mess, growing increasingly annoyed as Brett failed to respond to her calls and messages. When Brett finally showed up the next morning, he failed to see why Krista was being so dramatic, but she had just learnt that Doug Baldree, who was heading up one of the groups, was the lead writer for The Traveller's Owl, a travel website that could seriously hurt the hotel's reputation. When Brett's solution - to provide food for one of the groups in the ballroom - ended up making matters worse as the ballroom was already booked, a furious Krista ended up sacking him on the spot.

Finding himself unemployable after his experiences at Lassiters, Brett was full of resentment and, the following year, as the hotel attempted to win the prestigious Bronze Bell, he found a way to get revenge. Using hotel employee Katrina Marshall, he promised her the world if she helped him and soon, the pair of them were sabotaging the hotel's attempts to stage the Worldly Gems jewellery expo. After their initial attempts had failed to derail things, on the day of the expo Brett convinced Katrina to set off the hotel fire alarm, but she was caught out by colleague Taye Obasi. As she attempted to flee, she ran into Paul and Krista and was forced to confess everything. Paul and Krista then found Brett in his car, where he was waiting nearby, and told him that Katrina had told them what had been going on, before reporting them both to the police.
