After taking on the care of her grandson, Callum, Hilda Jones worked several cleaning jobs to pay the bills. It was whilst cleaning at Charlie’s bar that she met owner Steph Scully, who offered to introduce Callum to her friend Toadie Rebecchi. Toadie was depressed after his plans to adopt had fallen through, and Callum needed a male influence in his life, so the situation worked out well. But as Toadie took Callum home after their first day spent together, they were alarmed to find Hilda collapsed in the back garden, having suffered a stroke. At the hospital, it seemed that she would require months of recovery, and Toadie agreed to take Callum in.
