When a group of Ramsay Street residents went for a short break at the River Bend retreat, they met manager Kiri Durant and her employee Bobby Long. While Bobby wasn’t cut out for hospitality, frustrating Kiri with his lack of reliability, this proved to be the least of everyone’s problems when Gareth Bateman, the violent ex of Freya Wozniak, turned up. Gareth had already shot Freya’s boyfriend Levi, with Kiri believing that the gunshots must have been illegal rabbit hunters, which had been a problem in the area before. She sent Bobby, along with another of the guests, Nicolette Stone, to find the retreat’s minibus, then drive it to the office and call the police about the hunters. As they walked to the bus, Bobby told Nicolette about how Kiri had taken a chance on him, as he had a lot of debts and was desperate for work. They were then surprised to find that the minibus had already gone, unaware that Gareth had taken it, and was forcing Freya to drive at gunpoint.
