Character Profiles > Kiri Durant Gemma Bird Matheson

Kiri Durant 2022, 2024
Lived: 24 Ramsay Street
Born: 1996
Parents: Barbara and Alan Durant, Glen Donnelly (Biological)
Siblings: Rose
Occupation: Manager of River Bend Retreat, Events Manager/Investor at Yorokobi Vineyard

Unaware that she was the product of an affair between her mother Barbara and Glen Donnelly, Kiri Durant had a happy upbringing, sharing her parents' love of nature and taking over as manager of their bush retreat at River Bend. Glen, meanwhile, never forgot his daughter, whose middle name Hua meant moon, even getting a tattoo of a moon on his foot, but struggled with Barbara's request for him to have nothing to do with her. After overcoming addiction, Glen wanted to make up for the mistakes of the past and became intrigued about what Kiri was like as an adult. He found the River Bend retreat online, and ended up winning a holiday there, taking along several of his friends from Ramsay Street. Kiri welcomed the group to River Bend, completely oblivious to the fact that Glen was her long-lost father, and quickly developed a connection with Nicolette Stone, who was confused by Glen's interest in their brief relationship. After the Ramsay Street residents' holiday ended in disaster, with the death of Gareth Bateman, the retreat became a crime scene and Kiri, much to Glen's shock, turned up in Erinsborough looking for Nicolette. With Glen's housemate Terese Willis one of the only other people aware of his secret, he hoped that Kiri would soon leave and would never have to find out the truth about her parentage or the fact that he agreed to walk out of her life.

However, after learning that her parents were going to sell River Bend, Kiri had decided to stick around on Ramsay Street, believing that there might be a future with Nicolette. But as Glen struggled to tell Kiri the truth about himself, he ended up telling her that Nicolette was a user and couldn't be trusted. As Kiri found out all of the sordid details of Nicolette's past, including stealing a winning lottery ticket from a dead patient when she was a nurse, and giving Aaron and David a baby that wasn't actually theirs, Kiri decided that she didn't need the drama in her life. With Glen hoping that Kiri might now leave town again, Terese made him see that what he'd done was wrong, so he arranged a meeting with Nicolette and Kiri, wanting them to clear the air. When Nicolette found out that Glen had been the one who'd revealed her past to Kiri, she got angry with him and pushed him into the Lassiters pond, an outburst that was witnessed by Kiri, which only made her more sure that she didn't want to be involved with her.

Though Glen hoped that this would mean that Kiri was going to leave Erinsborough, he was surprised to learn that she'd accepted a job as events manager at Leo Tanaka's vineyard. With Glen already employed there as operations manager, he began to panic about seeing her everyday, and her suggestion that they carpool only made matters worse. The new job meant that Kiri wanted to move closer to Melbourne and, after striking up a friendship with Chloe Brennan - who had once been engaged to Nicolette - she ended up being offered a room at Chloe's house, meaning she would be living next-door to Glen and across the street from Nicolette. To make matters even more complicated, a romantic vibe was developing between Kiri and Chloe. As Chloe told Kiri a little more about her history with Nicolette, she also defended her ex, making it clear that Nicolette was a complicated person, but did have plenty of good qualities. Having decided to accept the room at Chloe's place, Kiri was touched when Nicolette gave her a jar of her favourite pickles as a welcome gift, grateful that she wasn't going to make things difficult between them. Nicolette, however, wasn't about to give up, hopeful that Kiri would change her mind when they got to know each other properly, but she was in for a disappoint as Kiri was actually developing an attraction to Chloe, but decided not to pursue it as they were housemates and she didn't want to make things awkward.

With Kiri growing closer to Chloe, she was also developing a friendship with Glen as they worked together. Despite his attempts to keep his emotional distance, Glen was liking Kiri more and more as he got to know her and couldn't resist the temptation of looking through a box of her personal possessions when he was left alone at no. 24 one day. He was moved to see photos and items from her childhood, but was caught by Chloe, who voiced her concerns about Glen's behaviour, adding them to Nicolette's worries about the way he'd behaved so possessively when Kiri had first arrived in Erinsborough. They decided to take their concerns to Leo, feeling that, as Glen and Kiri's boss, he had a duty of care to make sure there was no workplace harassment going on. When confronted, Glen quickly explained that he was just being friendly because Kiri had no family in the area, adding that he was actually in love with Terese. When Kiri overheard what Glen was saying, she was touched that he was going to all that effort for her, but was furious with Chloe and Nicolette for their unwanted interference in her life.

Just as Glen thought he'd managed to keep his secret covered up, Kiri's mum, Barbara, arrived in Erinsborough to find out more about her daughter's new job and home. Though surprised, Kiri was happy to see her mum, but when Glen spotted her from a distance, he realised that he was going to have to avoid her for the duration of her stay, or Kiri would find out the truth. Kiri invited her mum to 24 Ramsay Street for dinner, to meet Chloe and Freya, one of their other housemates, and Barbara explained that she and husband Alan were planning to do some travelling now that the sale of River Bend was complete. Happy that Kiri seemed to have found herself somewhere nice to live and work, she made plans to leave, but was taken by surprise when she saw spotted a man outside no. 22, wondering if she was imagining things or if it was Glen Donnelly. The following day, Barbara got in touch with Kiri to let her know that she and Alan had booked a six-month world cruise, leaving Glen relieved that he wouldn't need to worry about bumping into her for a while. Unfortunately, after seeing Glen talking to private investigator John Wong, who'd uncovered the secret about Glen being Kiri's father in the first place, Nicolette was sure that he was hiding something and went to Paul Robinson, Glen's half-brother and Terese's ex-husband, for more information. After learning that Glen was secretly in love with Terese, Paul decided to team up with Nicolette to try and uncover his secret. When John Wong failed to respond to any of Paul's messages, Nicolette started looking at other ways to find out Glen's secret, eventually tracking down his ex-wife, Karen Constintine, for answers. When Karen heard what was going on, she explained that she and Glen had been friends with Barbara and Alan, but had moved away soon after Kiri was born. As the pieces were slowly starting to fall into place for Nicolette, she phoned Paul, who in turn contacted John Wong, demanding answers or he'd take his business elsewhere.

Having finally found out the truth, Paul went to the vineyard, confronting Glen and announcing to Kiri that her new friend was actually her dad, not to mention the fact that boss Leo, and his twin brother, David, were her cousins, and Paul was her uncle. In a state of shock, Kiri headed home, her head full of questions about the circumstances surrounding her birth, whilst Nicolette was shocked to find out the truth - and the way that Paul had delivered it. When Kiri managed to speak to her mum, who was away on the cruise, Barbara said that she'd come back to Erinsborough and answer all of her questions in person. Unsure who she could trust anymore, Kiri turned to her faith for comfort and, when Barbara arrived, she found her at a local church. Barbara explained that, when she and Alan had struggled to conceive, the distance between them had led her to have a brief affair with Glen, which resulted in her falling pregnant. With Alan so excited about becoming a father, Barbara was unable to tell him the truth, so asked Glen to promise that he'd keep his distance. He and wife Karen then moved away, and Barbara only connected Glen once more, on the night of Kiri's birth, to tell him the news and the baby's name. As Glen filled in some of this information for Kiri, she realised how difficult it had been for him, not getting to see his daughter grow up. But as it seemed like her anger and upset might be dying down, a call came through from Alan, who had somehow found out the truth. Believing that Glen had told Alan out of spite, Kiri turned on him, only to learn that it was actually Terese who had told him, having answered a call from him and believing that Barbara had already been honest.

As Barbara returned to Alan and the cruise, Kiri remained in Erinsborough, needing some time to work everything out in her head. She came to rely on Chloe's friendship, but Kiri struggled to forgive Nicolette for her role in the whole thing. Continuing to look for answers, Kiri tried to talk to Glen, but became overwhelmed when he started giving her the details of how his affair with Barbara began. As it looked like Glen and Kiri were going to be unable to work together, she decided to resign, but Glen came up with the idea that they could work in different areas and on different shifts, so they would never have to see each other. Though Kiri agreed to give it a go, it quickly became clear that it wasn't going to work, and matters only got worse for Kiri when she spoke to Alan, who confirmed that things weren't good between him and Barbara. It became clear that Chloe was the only good thing in Kiri's life and the two grew closer, upsetting Nicolette, who became jealous of their closeness. Just as it was looking like they might become more than friends, Chloe said that it wasn't the right time, pointing out to Kiri that she had enough to deal with at the moment, with adding a relationship with her housemate into the mix. Now aware that Glen and Barbara's affair had started when he began attending an addiction support group she ran at the church, Kiri even began to struggle with her faith, unable to go into the local church that she'd been regularly visiting.

As Kiri and Glen continued to avoid each other at work, he ended up trying to move some barrels on his own, ending up trapped when one of them fell on him. After finding out what had happened, Kiri went to the hospital to check he was OK, making sure that he didn't know about her visit, but struggling with the thought that she actually cared about his wellbeing, not wanting to be disloyal to Alan. Unaware that Glen was struggling with taking pain medication as a recovering addict, Kiri visited him to check how he was doing, still confused about whether she wanted him to be a part of her life. As she struggled to deal with her feelings about Glen, Kiri ended up sleeping with Chloe after attending their housemate Mackenzie's wedding to Hendrix, with her and Nicolette. However, although the attraction between them had been growing for weeks, Kiri and Chloe were surprised to find that they weren't sexually compatible and wondered if they would just be better off as friends.

Having spent weeks confused over Nicolette and her split personality, Kiri was touched when she found out the lengths Nic was going to in order to recreate Hendrix's hash brown recipe, which was to be served at his memorial. Hendrix had died only a few days after his marriage to Mackenzie and as they did their best to be sensitive and help out, Kiri and Nicolette grew closer. With Kiri's birthday then approaching, she decided to go ahead with a planned party, aware that Hendrix had wanted his own memorial to be a massive party, so she felt that he would have approved. Having decided to invite Nicolette to the party, she wondered whether to ask Glen too, as things had started to become more civil between them after his accident at work. She decided to invite Glen, telling him that she wanted things to be better between them, but was unaware that he'd been struggling with the painkillers he'd become hooked on after the accident, and was going cold turkey. Having agreed to go to the party that was being held that afternoon, Glen was determined not to miss the chance to bond with his daughter, while Nicolette was also happy for the chance to spend time with Kiri. Unfortunately, problems at home meant that she couldn't go to the party, but she gave Kiri a prayer candle as a gift, hopeful that it might help while she was struggling to go to church.

With Glen struggling with his withdrawal symptoms, Terese tried to persuade him not to attend the party and, as they approached the Waterhole, he realised that he wouldn't be able to do it. Not wanting to spoil Kiri's day by telling her the truth, he claimed that there was an emergency at work, but when she later caught him outside, she was furious with him once again lying to her. Glen was forced to come clean about his attempts to get clean and Kiri finally understood what was going on, agreeing to a fresh start, telling Glen that, although she didn't need another dad in her life, she could always use a new friend. Having sorted out one personal relationship, Kiri was still caught between Chloe and Nicolette. After another disappointing night with Chloe, Kiri realised that maybe things weren't meant to be between them and Chloe agreed that they should stop trying to force things and just go back to being friends. Meanwhile, the attraction between Nicolette and Kiri seemed to be growing, Nicolette persuaded Kiri to try going back to church. When Freya and Kiri were held hostage at gunpoint by Emma McIver, Nicolette ended up walking in on the scene and calmly saving the day, earning her even more respect and gratitude from Kiri. Having initially told Nicolette that she wasn't interested in a relationship, Kiri realised that she'd made a mistake, inviting Nicolette to River Bend for a day out together. As she tried to recreate their first kiss at the retreat, Kiri finally admitted that she wanted more than just friendship from Nicolette, who was relieved and admitted that she wanted the same thing.

With the news that River Bend was already back up for sale, Terese began to seriously consider using the money from her divorce from Paul and her share of Lassiters Hotel to buy the retreat and move there with Glen. As Kiri also fell in love with the idea of returning to River Bend, she wondered if Nicolette would be willing to try a long-distance relationship, perhaps only seeing each other at the weekends for a while. The situation then changed again and, with Nicolette's family planning a move to New York, Kiri wondered if perhaps they just weren't meant to be and wouldn't hold each other back. But when Paul and Terese suddenly got back together and decided to stay in Erinsborough and give their marriage another chance, she was no longer in a position to buy River Bend, while it also meant that Nicolette would be staying in town, with Paul's planned move to New York her main reason for going. While Glen decided that he didn't want to stick around and see Terese with Paul, Kiri felt that her relationship with Nicolette was something to stay for. They ended up staying together for a year, but when Kiri met new pastor Sasha McLain at her bible group, he would change things for good. As Sasha developed feelings for Nicolette, he started interfering in her relationship with Kiri, telling Kiri that they seemed to have very different morals. Desperate to prove that Sasha couldn't be trusted, Nicolette started trying to tempt him and arranging secret meetings. Although they never slept together, Kiri was appalled when she found out, realising that she could never really trust Nicolette, and she decided to leave to join Glen on Magnetic Island.

Soon after, Nicolette also left Erinsborough as one of the people trying to cover up the death of Krista Sinclair. When the truth came out, and then Krista was found to be alive and well, Nicolette returned to Erinsborough, but soon found herself being followed and threatened by Sasha's wife, Veronica. Veronica was convinced that Nicolette and Sasha had been having an affair and were still seeing each other, but Nicolette hadn't seen him in a long time. A vengeful Veronica then started revealing the details of Nicolette's attempts to tempt Sasha into an affair to her shocked family, forcing Nicolette to call Kiri and see if she'd heard anything from Sasha. Kiri hadn't seen him either and, still upset, asked Nicolette not to contact her again. Eventually, Nicolette found Sasha through some contacts at the church and visited him on Philip Island, eventually getting him to talk to Veronica and make her see that their marriage was failing long before he was tempted by Nicolette. Nicolette did, however, admit that for the first time in her life, she'd found herself developing feelings for a man and that Veronica hadn't just imagined the whole thing.

Later that year, Kiri found out that Leo was struggling to keep the vineyard open after a series of problems, and she turned up to try and help. Leo was very happy to see her and, as they wandered around the vineyard and chatted about David, who had died six months earlier, Kiri began to remember just how much she'd loved working there. As a potential deal with Nicolette's father, Vic, had just fallen through when he'd left town suddenly, Kiri started trying to bring in some new business, then came up with the idea that she could buy in herself. She admitted that it wouldn't be as much money as Vic had been offering, but it might be enough to keep the business going for a while so they could turn things around together, and Leo was only too happy to accept.

Having accepted Kiri's offer, Leo then received a call from Nicolette and her brother, Byron, who had scraped together enough money to make a small investment in the vineyard. When they arrived at the vineyard, Nicolette and Kiri were shocked to come face to face for the first time in a while, and were equally shocked when Leo suggested that the three of them could all invest, to make a four-way partnership. Though Kiri and Nicolette insisted that they could work together, Leo wasn't completely convinced and offered the idea of a trial period to see how it would all work. Kiri then arranged a function for customers to try out their products, hopeful that it would bring back some of Yorokobi's lost business. Kiri was grateful when Mackenzie and her boyfriend Haz offered to help out and also offered her somewhere to stay, but when Nicolette turned up and was given all of the menial tasks, she was upset and felt that Kiri was punishing her. The tension between the two women soon boiled over, with Nicolette admitting that she had developed feelings for Sasha and Kiri realising that she had been right to be suspicious of her all along.

When Leo was then contacted by a potential new investor, he asked Kiri what she wanted to do - whether she still wanted to invest, and if she'd prefer to work with or without Nic and Byron. Kiri admitted that she was unsure and that it was ultimately Leo's decision and she focussed her efforts on getting to know some of the newcomers to Ramsay Street, including couple Remi and Cara who had moved into no. 30. When Nicolette found Kiri, Remi and Cara chatting, she was upset, wondering why the couple hadn't really wanted to spend much time with her. After learning about the potential new investor at the vineyard, Nicolette was even more upset, accusing Kiri of messing things up for her at work and stealing her potential friends.

When Nicolette then pointed out that Kiri wouldn't have come back if she hated her that much, and perhaps deep down she wanted to fix things between them, Kiri couldn't deny it. After taking a walk by her old church, Kiri was surprised to bump into Sasha, who had been called in to help following the news that the church was being closed due to financial problems. Kiri and Sasha then finally took the opportunity to talk about everything that had happened, with Sasha confirming that he had been attracted to Nicolette and had tried to sabotage her and Kiri's relationship to get rid of her. He explained that, when Nicolette had turned the tables and started pursuing him, to show that he wasn't as perfect as he made himself out to be, nothing physical had ever happened between them. Happy to finally have Sasha's side of the story, Kiri was still left confused by Nicolette's recent declaration that she'd been attracted to Sasha. Aware that she had to talk things through with Nic and clear the air, the two of them finally spoke openly and honestly. Nic admitted that, at the time, she'd believed that she was attracted to a man for the first time in her life, but she'd come to realise that she was actually just attracted to the drama and the possibility of self-sabotaging her own relationship, feeling that Kiri was always going to leave her sooner or later.

Having cleared the air, Kiri and Nicolette were finally able to laugh and reminisce together, but Kiri's thoughts were also on the church, upset at the news that it would be closing and taking away a safe space for so many people. Nicolette decided that she was going to help, turning to Toadie and asking him about his fundraising efforts at The Sonya Rebecchi Foundation. When he explained that he had some donated furniture that he needed to move along, Nicolette quickly arranged a sale in the grounds of Lassiters, but decided to keep it a secret from Kiri, just incase they didn't raise much money. Kiri did find out, as she walked in on Nicolette arguing with the hotel's temporary manager Brett about him suddenly pulling the plug on the sale, and although the plan didn't raise enough money to save the church, Kiri was nonetheless impressed with Nic's efforts.

With Kiri and Nicolette growing closer again, and following another successful event at the vineyard, Leo told them that they'd been invited to pitch for a Melbourne experience. The three of them then came up with an idea for a wine-making and Roman feast event and, as they all came together to work on it, Leo decided that he was going to have the contracts drawn up and make the partnership official. At this point, Krista revealed that Byron had sabotaged a previous deal with a silent investor, telling them that Leo was no longer interested. Krista had overheard Byron on the phone and had agreed to keep it quiet, with Nicolette also agreeing to keep the secret when she found out. Upset that he could no longer trust Byron, Leo called off the partnership again, which also left things up in the air between Nicolette and Kiri, who was upset by the lies. Byron managed to persuade Kiri not to let the incident come between them and as she and Nicolette chatted about the past, and their inability to move on with anyone else, they shared a kiss.

As Kiri and Nicolette decided to give their relationship another try, Leo was persuaded to go ahead with the vineyard deal, but only if Byron became a silent partner. It quickly became clear that working with the loved-up Nicolette and Kiri was going to be difficult for Leo, as they sided against him, two against one, on every decision for the vineyard. Meanwhile, Kiri was impressed when Nicolette noticed that Aaron seemed to be distracted and, believing he was still struggling without David, offered him her full support and a shoulder to cry on. When Nicolette then overheard Aaron on the phone to a man named Logan, learning that not only had they slept together, but Aaron may also have been exposed to Hepatitis B, she was horrified. When Kiri walked in and found her girlfriend ranting at Aaron, she attempted to calm the situation, finally taking Nic out for a walk to calm down. She soon made Nicolette see how much Aaron must have been struggling and that he needed her support rather than her anger, so they went to the hospital, where Aaron was awaiting the result of a blood test to see if he had been vaccinated against Hep B. The news was good, and Kiri was impressed with the way Nicolette had backed down so quickly, pointing out that the old Nicolette wouldn't have behaved like that. As the pair then focussed on helping Aaron to spend time with them, rather than shying away from being around happy couples, Kiri was unaware that Nicolette had been secretly keeping a list of grievances against Aaron for future use.

As things started to get more serious between Kiri and Nicolette, many of Nic's old insecurities returned, particularly when Kiri mentioned that she was going to her old church for the final service before it closed. Worried that Kiri's faith would come between them again, Nicolette turned up at the service, hoping to look supportive, but Kiri soon saw through it and Nic admitted her fears. Kiri told her that, as long as they continued to talk and be honest about things, then they could always work through it. However, a bigger hurdle was about to hit them - after deciding that they wanted to move in together, and asking Aaron to join them, Kiri saw a file on Nicolette's phone, listing all of the things Aaron had done wrong since David's death. Nicolette admitted that she'd been worried about how David's death would affect things and needed some kind of insurance, and that she had also contacted a lawyer, showing them the video that she, David and Aaron had made, agreeing to co-parent Isla, and wanting to know how much legal weight it carried. Kiri was horrified, particularly as Nicolette had spent the last week assuring Aaron that they were all a family and that Isla's best interests came first. After confiding in new friends Remi and Cara, Kiri decided to give Nicolette one final chance. Nic insisted that she would delete the list and cancel the lawyer's report, and Kiri warned that if she had one more of these nervous panics and did something stupid, then the relationship was over. It didn't take long for this to happen, however, when Kiri caught Nic the next day, with a letter from the lawyer. Nic couldn't deny that she'd been about to read it to find out her rights, and Kiri said that, if she'd meant anything she'd said the previous day, then she would have torn up the letter without looking at it. Kiri then decided that the relationship was over and that she'd become a silent partner in the vineyard and leave town. After saying her goodbyes to Remi and Cara - who also gave her a lift to the airport - Kiri left Ramsay Street, and Nicolette's life, for the final time.
