The wife of influential Japanese businessman Mr Udagawa, Mrs Udagawa joined her husband on one of his many business trips to Australia, in 1989. Following a language mix-up with bank manager Des Clarke, in which Des called Japanese women dirty, rather than beautiful, Paul and Gail Robinson were keen to avoid too much damage to their business. They arranged a dinner party, inviting Mr and Mrs Udagawa, as well as Des, who brought along his friend Kerry Bishop. Unfortunately, Mrs Udagawa was to receive a poor impression of Australian hospitality. As the guests arrived, Joe Mangel, Kerry’s fiance, was in the kitchen, fixing the sink. As he overheard Kerry and Joe introducing themselves as an engaged couple, Joe flew off the handle and burst in to attack Des. Unfortunately, he missed, caught his chin on Des’ elbow and knocked himself out. Mr and Mrs Udagawa made a quick exit and left the next day for a two-week tour of New Zealand.
