Tom Nguyen 2020, 2023
Occupation: Bar Staff at The Waterhole

Tom Nguyen was manning the bar at The Waterhole one day when Rose Walker attempted to pay, only to find that her card was declined. Rose had been working at Toadie Rebecchi’s law firm in order to find out information on one of his clients, her estranged husband, who she was divorcing. Toadie had found out what she was doing, but couldn’t help feeling sympathy for her and, when he saw her predicament, he offered to put it on his tab, leaving Rose embarrassed but grateful.

A few years later, when Erinsborough newcomer JJ Varga-Murphy found himself in The Waterhole one day, having seemingly taken a strange interest in several of the locals, he was approached by Tom, who asked him for some ID. As he was only 16, JJ quickly said that he was leaving. The following week, Leo Tanaka was helping out his dad, Paul Robinson, by keeping wealthy Lassiters investor Reece Sinclair away from an accountancy convention that was being held at the hotel. The convention had run into a huge problem, with many of the staff being taken down by food poisoning, but Paul didn’t want Reece to find out, so vineyard owner Leo was left to try and impress her. After convincing her to try several of his wines at The Waterhole, Leo then attempted to move on to his line of whiskeys, insisting that barman Tom go and find some out in the storeroom. Tom insisted that they didn’t have any, and while Leo’s back was turned, Reece quickly left and made her way back to the hotel.

A couple of weeks later, after being stood up on her first date in two years, Mackenzie Hargreaves went to the bar and asked Tom about his strongest cocktail. He told her that it didn’t have a name - just a reputation. Soon after, it emerged that Reece was actually in Erinsborough searching for her half-sister, Krista, the wild child of the family who’d gone missing, her last contact being a postcard from Lassiters. As Reece started trying to work out whether Krista had definitely been at the hotel, she started asking staff to do ‘market research’ for her, including Tom, trying to figure out if she’d left any clues or information during her visits to The Waterhole. Tom told her that he enjoyed doing market research, and had once been paid $50 to test out toothpastes, but couldn’t give her any other information about the ‘random’ names she was looking into.
