When Paul McClain was forced to spend his holidays coaching football with young kids, as punishment for a muck up day prank that had gone wrong, he found himself spending time with young Stuart Peterson, whose father, Giles, stood on the sidelines during training, shouting at his son to try harder. Having finally had enough of the man’s harsh words, Paul approached Giles and told him to lay off his son, only to find out that Giles was a talent scout for the NRL. Thinking that he’d blown his only chance at a career in football, Paul was surprised to hear a few days later that Giles had recommended him for a trial with the national league.
