Following an accident at the Flamingo Bar that left Britney Barnes dead, Paul Robinson was also hospitalised with a lacerated liver. The incident brought him closer to estranged wife, Terese Willis, and as time went on and they grew closer, Paul realised that he could use his poor health to capitalise on Terese's attention. When Dr Karl Kennedy told Paul that his health was improving, Paul insisted that he was still unwell and wanted a second opinion. With neither Karl nor Paul's son David able to find any reason for Paul's persistent pain, Dr Oscar Russell was contacted. Though Dr Russell admitted that he usually helped people to fake illness for insurance reasons, he had no problem with helping Paul - for a price - if it brought him back together with his wife. A few days later, Dr Russell returned with his diagnosis, a hepatic subcapsular haematoma, telling Paul that it could explain the abdominal pain and Paul could also claim to have nausea and a pain in his shoulder to add authenticity. When Terese heard about it, Dr Russell told her that it was caused by clotting after a liver injury but was very hard to spot, which was probably why Karl and David hadn't picked up on it.

When David heard about it, he insisted on speaking to Dr Russell, who agreed to a meeting with Karl and David, confident that he'd be able to put them off the scent. But Dr Russell's attempts to fool them only made them more suspicious and Karl started looking into Oscar's credentials, learning that he'd had a hearing with the medical board. As David became concerned that his dad was being conned, it dawned on him that Paul had intentionally hired a dodgy doctor in order to trick Terese into reuniting with him. David confronted Paul, who eventually confirmed the truth, leading to the destruction of his relationship with Terese and to David reporting Dr Russell, who was deregistered.

A couple of months later, David was facing his own career crisis after he and nurse Freya Wozniak intentionally left Gareth Bateman to die when they could have saved him. With someone knowing the truth about what had happened and blackmailing them, David and Freya decided to own up to hospital C.O.O. Clive Gibbons, but were beaten to it by the blackmailer, who made an anonymous tip-off. After being questioned by the police, David was convinced that the blackmailer was hospital employee Dean Covey, who hadn't reacted well to David rejecting his advances. However, with Dean denying any knowledge of what had happened, David then spotted Oscar watching from a distance and going into the Waterhole and followed him, where he said that he'd been people watching, something he'd had a lot of time to do since David's complaint got him deregistered. As David realised who'd been behind the blackmail, they gathered evidence that proved Oscar could have overheard him talking to Freya and presented it to the police, who agreed to look into it, but explained that David had bigger problems to deal with, as he was facing a medical manslaughter charge.
