When Krista Sinclair lost her baby after becoming trapped in the Lassiters hotel sauna, hotel owner Paul Robinson wanted to launch a full investigation into the incident. His girlfriend, Chelsea Murphy, who'd been filling in for him as acting manager of the hotel, tried to put him off the idea, saying that she'd look into it herself and suspected recently-fired employee Penny Shrewster of being behind it. With Penny overseas, Paul became frustrated at the lack of progress and asked IT specialist Jeffrey Swan to see what he could find out about the incident and the widespread technical problems the hotel had been dealing with on that day. With Paul at the memorial service for baby Hope, Chelsea was looking after the hotel when Jeffrey Swan arrived with his findings. Chelsea almost convinced him to hand the paperwork over to her, but when he found out who she was, Jeffrey backed off and said he'd come back and deal directly with Paul. When Chelsea then found Jeffrey at the Waterhole, he said that he'd tell her more about the report if she bought lunch for him. She went along with this, and Jeffrey then told her that his findings were that the sauna door had been remotely locked and that Chelsea had been the person who'd been behind it. She tried to claim that it must have been a mix-up, but Jeffrey saw right through her, aware that she was desperate to cover up what she'd done. With Chelsea aware that if anyone found out that she'd locked Krista in the room on purpose, jealous that she was impressing Paul with her work at the hotel, she'd lose her relationship with Paul and potentially be facing criminal charges.

With Jeffrey refusing to help her, she tried one last tactic and seduced him in the hotel office, saying that if he helped her, she could do something for him. Her plan appeared to have worked as Jeffrey later sent over an amended version of his report, saying that the results of his investigation were inconclusive. The following day, however, Jeffrey returned to the hotel, where he tracked down Chelsea but also bumped into Krista, who was interested to learn about the investigation and its results, still wanting justice for what had happened to her. Worried that Jeffrey was going to say too much, Chelsea claimed that she'd called him in to ask him to triple check everything he'd looked into, quickly taking him to the Waterhole for a chat. There, he told her that he'd felt a connection with her and was hopeful that she felt the same way. Desperate to keep him on side, Chelsea took him back to her hotel room, managing to persuade him that she wanted to take things further, but she was still in a relationship and things were complicated for her. When Jeffrey told her that he'd back back in the area in a week's time, she told him that she would meet him again and they could talk further about their "relationship". But as Jeffrey was leaving Chelsea's hotel room, he was spotted by Krista, who started to become suspicious that there was something going on.

Chelsea did her best to make Krista believe that nothing suspicious was going on, claiming that Jeffrey had been in her hotel room to use her laptop charger, but decided that she needed to do more to keep her quiet. Aware that Krista was a recovering addict and feeling fragile following baby Hope's memorial, Chelsea set her up, leaving some prescription drugs in the hotel office, saying that they'd been left behind by a guest and she'd deal with them later. Once alone, Krista took the drugs and Chelsea later found her at home, promising to keep her secret. When Jeffrey next turned up at the hotel, he was disappointed that she'd been ignoring his messages, but she insisted that she was just very busy and her relationship status was still complicated. Jeffrey insisted that they could still spend the day together in her room and he ordered a bottle of champagne from room service. When Krista spotted Holly with the champagne, she was surprised to learn that it was going to Chelsea's hotel room, having been led to believe that Chelsea was at a meeting offsite. Krista offered to take the champagne herself, and was shocked to find Jeffrey and Chelsea in the room together, immediately warning that she'd have to tell Paul. Chelsea then tracked Krista down to the office and said that, if Krista revealed her secret, then she'd have to tell everyone that Krista had fallen off the wagon.

When Krista finally worked out what Chelsea had been up to, she confronted her, but as an argument broke out, Chelsea pushed Krista, who hit her head and was knocked unconscious. When she woke up in hospital, Krista had no memory of why she'd been in Chelsea's hotel room, and Chelsea hoped that she'd managed to get away with it all. However, Krista's memories soon started to return and she realised that she needed proof, first contacting Penny Shrewster, the hotel employee who'd been fired on the same day as the sauna incident and who Chelsea had been trying to frame for it. After learning that Chelsea had been the one who'd sent Penny off on a holiday, telling her that it was an apology for her sudden firing, Krista realised that she'd been right all along and next contacted Jeffrey. After learning that Chelsea was now engaged to Paul and celebrating with a big party at Lassiters, Jeffrey - who'd been trying, and failing, to get in touch with Chelsea for days - realised that he'd been used and he gave Krista the original IT report which proved Chelsea's guilt. Jeffrey then joined Krista as she confronted Chelsea in front of Paul and their gathered guests, and Chelsea was unable to hide her guilt. Paul then took back the engagement ring and told her to get out of his life.
