With David Tanaka being blackmailed over his part in the death of Gareth Bateman, Freya Wozniak - who'd also been involved in the incident - decided to try and help him to raise some money to pay off the blackmailer. She contacted her brother, Zane, and arranged to meet him. Having not been close to her brother or parents, due to them all feeling that her relationship with Gareth was a mistake, Freya claimed that Gareth's death had left her in a lot of debt to some bad people and she needed Zane's help to approach their parents for a loan. Zane explained that he and their parents had been hoping that she'd come to her senses and wanted to apologise and return to her family home in Echuca, so Freya took a different angle and started claiming that Gareth had been the one keeping her from her family and that she missed them and had realised the error of her ways. Zane then softened towards his sister and offered to send her the money himself, allowing her and David to pay off the blackmailer.

A couple of weeks later, Zane turned up at Freya's home on Ramsay Street, worried that he hadn't heard from her and that the money he sent hadn't been enough. He also told Freya that he'd spoken to their parents and they wanted to see her. Feeling guilty about what she'd done, Freya told Zane the truth about the blackmail, and that she and David had been found out and were now facing charges over their part in Gareth's death. Zane admitted that he was worried about his sister and told her that she needed to be with her family, leaving Freya considering going home to Echuca until her sentencing, before realising that she needed to stick around and support David. When the time came for Freya's sentencing hearing a couple of months later, Zane returned, having decided to give his character reference at the court in person. Unfortunately, things had worsened dramatically for both Freya and David. David was being held on remand, and Freya was being blackmailed by Gareth's ex, Emma McIver, into helping with her criminal activities. With Emma threatening to use her contacts to get David seriously hurt in prison, Freya was forced to go along with things, and Zane was shocked to learn just how bad things had gotten, as word came through that David had suffered serious burns after an 'accident' in the prison kitchen.
