Peter Bensley
Played: Tony Chapman
Appeared: 1986
Born 6th February 1954 in Warialda, New South Wales, Peter Bensley left the country to begin an engineering course in Sydney, but, after only one day, he realised that it wasn’t for him. After three years of study at the Independent Theatre School of Dramatic Art, he flitted between various jobs, before being offered a job with the Globe Shakespearean Company in London and settling on a career in acting.
During the 1970s, Peter became a familiar face on Australian television, with roles in series including Rush, Class of ‘75, Chopper Squad and the part of Dr Mike Newman in The Young Doctors, which lasted for two years and made him a household name. Roles in Prisoner: Cell Block H, Home and Away and Neighbours (as Tony Chapman for a few weeks in 1986) followed throughout the 1980s.
The 1990s saw more guest roles for Peter, in series including Police Rescue and Round The Twist, as well as the role of Dr John Austin in 1992’s mini-series, The New Adventures of Black Beauty. In 1996, he scored another regular role as Chief Inspector Jeff Hawker, in the Sydney-based police drama, Water Rats, a role he played until the series ended in 2001.
In recent years, Peter has turned his hand to writing, releasing the novel On A Wing And A Prayer, and he currently lives in Sydney with his partner and their three children.
