When young Lucy Robinson won a television contest for a date with ironman Grant Kenny, she soon realised that she was too young to go. Her cousin, Nikki Dennison, a huge fan of Grant’s, agreed to go in her place and pose as Lucy. Although Nikki was already tentatively dating Mike Young, she made a huge deal out of her “date” with Grant, but was disappointed when they were joined by his publicist, Moira. Moira made it clear that the date was just a quick dinner, as Grant had a schedule to keep to and, as before he left, Nikki had her photo taken with him, which later appeared in the local newspaper. Nikki took the opportunity to tell everyone that she and Grant had really hit it off and would be going on a second date, though her lies quickly caused problems in her relationship with Mike, and her sneaking out also caused problems at home with her aunt Helen Daniels.

Born in 1963, Grant Kenny won a bronze medal for canoeing at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. He was also a well-known ironman and surf lifesaver in the 1980s. He won both junior and senior ironman titles, the first in 1980 and went on to win four consecutive National Ironman Championships. He married fellow Olympian Lisa Curry in 1986 and they have three children.
