A big cast crisis looms for Neighbours

Neighbours is facing a cast crisis with heart-throb Guy Pearce – who plays Mike Young – quitting the popular series. Like Annie Jones (Jane Harris), Guy has decided not to renew his contract with the show.

With Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan long gone from Ramsay Street, the pressure was on Guy and Annie to stay. But a TV Week source says: “Guy feels he’s been there long enough and his film and music careers are now his priorities.”

Guy has two films - Heaven Tonight and Hunting - set for release, plus a new record, the title track from Heaven Tonight. Asked about Guy’s future, his agent simply says: “He’s getting many movie offers.”

Annie and her husband, director Paul Maloney, have decided to leave Melbourne and live in Perth. Network Ten is trying to keep the departures under wraps to minimise the negative publicity as Neighbours’ 1000th episode approaches.

Neighbours might not be dead by the end of the year, but I will be beating it regularly,” predicts Derryn Hinch, whose show outrated Neighbours one week in Brisbane and another in Melbourne.

“In Brisbane they’ve been plotting a graph which shows me with a 60-degree incline going up and Neighbours with a 40-degree incline going down. I was one of the few people who didn’t believe Neighbours was totally invincible. I think I’ve proved it.”
