Richard’s quitting the neighbourhood…
Richard Huggett is quitting Neighbours. His one-year contract ends in November and he has told producers he will not continue.
The 25-year-old joined Network Ten’s Neighbours after winning a TV Week Logie for his role as bad boy Sonny Bennett in E Street.
Richard says he has enjoyed playing Glen Donnelly but wants “more demanding” roles.
“I was always pretty adamant that one year is enough to be in one TV series,” he says. “The thing that has changed in me is that I want to do material which means something to me, stuff with a harder edge. I suppose quality is what I mean – not pumping it out like a sausage factory.”
Richard is keen to work in film and theatre.
Working in Melbourne in Neighbours separated Richard from his girlfriend Myriam Loda, who lives in Sydney. “One of us travels most weekends, but it has been hard,” he says.
Richard and Myriam are planning an overseas trip from December, including a visit to her family in Israel. Does the prospect of returning next year to join the ranks of unemployed actors worry Richard?
“I worry and I don’t worry, he says. “There are times when you start getting scared and you have to tell yourself, ‘Don’t be silly, I’ll be okay’.”
