One Year Ago - August 2005

Several new faces and a dramatic wedding…

 

• The Hoylands finally manage to track down Kayla, as Steph feels that she can’t simply take baby Ashley, despite Kayla’s wishes. It emerges that Kayla hasn’t told her boyfriend, Anthony, about the baby. He finds out when Steph, Max, Boyd and Ashley turn up at his house and is delighted with the news, making it clear to Kayla that he will look after them both

Following her very public break-up with Karl, Izzy vanishes from Erinsborough, and both Karl and Paul are suspects in her disappearance. Desperate to clear his name, Paul manages to track her down to a spa retreat in the country, and persuades her to return with him and set up home at 22 Ramsay Street. The neighbours are left shocked by their audacity but they enjoy winding them up with loud parties. Although Izzy seems to be coping, it quickly emerges that she has become dependant on prescription drugs

Stuart and Sindi’s wedding day finally arrives, but Toadie is convinced that recent accidents involving Sindi weren’t as innocent as they seemed. When he finally finds evidence that she was stalking Stu during his bucks’ night, he knocks himself out and the photos go missing. His attempts to stop the wedding fail, but, while the happy couple are away on honeymoon, he retrieves the photos and heads to their holiday resort. He finds Sindi, who realises that her happiness is about to come unravelled and ends up pushing Toadie down the stairs. Although he’s uninjured, Stu witnesses the whole thing and Sindi is taken away for psychiatric treatment. Once in hospital, she asks Stu for an annulment – he refuses and Sindi announces that she’s leaving for a psychiatric hospital in New South Wales

New students, Rachel and Zeke Kinski, start at Erinsborough High and immediately draw attention to themselves as they’ve always been home schooled and know little of pop culture or how to behave around people their age. Susan has trouble with their father, Alex, who isn’t sure that the school is good enough, but their problems quickly lead to romance


Connor and Serena finally realise that they make a good team at work and start growing closer before sharing a kiss. Her parents are shocked when they find out what’s going on, while Connor finds himself worried about the age difference, as his friends mock him for dating a schoolgirl

Janae’s self-image problems get worse as a video of her singing and dancing is sent by her family to Stupid Aussies. Although she wins, she finds herself the butt of everyone’s jokes at school. Her reliance on Karl increases, and she considers having a breast enlargement until he succeeds in talking her out of it. Meanwhile, Joe and Lyn’s romance steps up a gear, and Janelle decides to test his fidelity by pretending that they slept together after getting drunk at Sky’s 18th birthday party. When Joe owns up to Lyn about what happened, Janelle is satisfied that he’s honest and, after a few false starts, Joe and Lyn finally get it together

 

Five Years Ago - August 2001

The unlikely arrest of an upstanding citizen, and the end of several relationships made for a busy few weeks…

• Toadie’s relationship with Sheena takes an interesting turn when he meets her mother, Rhonda, and realises that she’s flirting with him. He is worried that he’s tempted by her and, after desperately trying to avoid being left alone with Rhonda, he admits everything to Sheena. They realise that, if they can’t be honest with each other, they should probably split up

Flick and Joel’s relationship faces more ups and downs as she decides to go back and live with her family, and becomes jealous of Joel’s growing friendship with his ex-girlfriend, Dee. Having decided that he could do without the drama in his life, Joel dumps Flick on her 18th birthday

Darcy’s life grows ever more complicated as he continues to deceive Karl over his plans to sell off the surgery. An oblivious Karl invites Darcy to become a partner in the practice. Meanwhile, Dee stumbles on Tess and Darcy kissing in his car and realises that the two people closest to her have betrayed her. Darcy manages to convince Tess to stay with him by proposing to her, and even owns up to her about his plans for the surgery

Libby wins a journalism award for her feature on Lance and the quiz show scam, and is then offered a job as youth editor at the Chronicle newspaper. However, she meets with editor Martin West, who learns that she’s pregnant and suddenly retracts the offer. Libby realises that she’s been a victim of discrimination and decides to sue

Following their dramas with Larissa, Paul and Tad struggle to live together under the same roof and Tad decides to move out. He goes to stay with the Kennedys, but the situation changes when Paul falls off his bike and is left in a wheelchair for a few weeks, completely dependant on Tad

Harold accompanies Michelle to a local protest about animal rights, and the organiser, Marianne, chains them, along with herself, to the gates, causing them all to be arrested – with Harold dressed as a rabbit – when the police arrive

As her attempts to meet with Woody continue, Steph is given the chance, by the police, to see him again. During the meeting, Woody tells Steph that he wants to be with her, and will leave witness protection. They realise that they could be hiding out together for the rest of their lives, but decide that it’s the only way they can be happy

 


Ten Years Ago - August 1996

An old face bid a sad farewell to Erinsborough…

 

• After realising that he cannot live next-door to Cheryl following their difficult break-up, Lou decides to take some time away from Erinsborough and go bush. Although many Ramsay Street residents give him a farewell send-off, Cheryl can’t face saying goodbye and watches from the window as he leaves

Karl finds himself getting more involved with young hooligan Pete Collin and Pete’s father, Gary, warns him off after Karl gets social services involved and, when Karl fails to back off, Gary plants a bomb in the surgery, which explodes one evening, though nobody is injured

After following Debbie’s advice on her psychic hotline, Greg Mundy leaves his wife, Hazel, who holds Debbie responsible for the entire situation. After they fail to talk things through, she sends them to see Karl, and decides to quit her new career as a telephone psychic

After calling in Mick Anderson, to deal with some possums in the loft, Angie finds herself attracted to him and struggles to deal with her feelings. She calls an end to things when he asks her to go away with him

Danni’s fashion design business is helped out when Marlene offers her the use of her old bric-a-brac shop while Darren finds himself taking over Handy Sam’s from Mal – with money from a loan shark

Phil’s latest novel receives a lot of attention from his publishing company and Debbie decides to try and set her dad up with publisher Roz Kemp, but quickly realises that she shouldn’t have interfered

Billy and Toadie decide to make some extra money by setting up a babysitting business, but their first job – looking after Lolly Carpenter – goes badly when she goes missing
