• Daphne is annoyed as Madge comments on her past career
• Madge looks through Danny's wallet
• Helen hires a private investigator to find Douglas Blake
|
No 24: Danny is ready to go out, and Madge asks if he's going anywhere special, admitting that she's worried that he's being led astray. She says that he needs the
guidance of a strong woman, who's willing to stand by his side and support him. Danny mistakenly thinks she's referring to Marcie, but she explains that she was talking about herself, and was hoping that she could give him some advice about money. She
tells him that money is the root of all evil, but he says that right now, he just needs to know where he can get some more of it.
No 28: The next morning, Daphne turns her back for a brief moment, and finds Zoe eating her breakfast. She lets her have it, and says that she'll need some fuel for her day of job-hunting.
Zoe admits that it's getting depressing, trudging around to the same places saying the same things, and then she says that she's struggling to find the bus fares. Daphne offers to lend her $10, making her promise just to spend it on the fares - and says
that this is the last time she'll ever lend her any money.
No 24: Madge volunteers Shane to go and do the shopping for her - though he points out that his wallet was stolen, so he'll need the money if she wants him to go.
Once Shane has left, Madge turns her attention to Max - she sits next to him, as he tries to read the newspaper, and says that money is always a concern, and she's worried about Danny. Max asks what she's talking about, and she explains that Danny's
wallet may have fallen open in her hands last night, and she may have noticed that he had $180 in there. Max still doesn't see the problem, and Madge implies that he may have fallen in with the wrong crowd and he may be doing things he doesn't want to,
because he's so starved of attention at home. Max reminds Madge that it's her whose kids don't come to her when they're in trouble, and she's upset by this comment and walks out of the room. Max then decides that maybe she has a point, and he goes
outside.
. . .
Ramsay Street - No 24 Balcony: Danny is sitting, reading a book on computing, when Max comes and sits next to him. Max says that they need to have a chat, and he
mentions the $180 that Madge found - Danny is furious about her snooping in his wallet, but Max just asks where he got it from. Danny says that Max should trust him, and then says that he won it gambling, after getting a tip from a guy at work. Max
is amused about this, and asks which horse it was - Danny says 'King Chicken'.
Newsagency: Zoe is walking out of the shop with a scratch card, looking very hopeful.
Daphne's Coffee Shop: Zoe walks in, claiming that she's just taking a short break from job-hunting, then goes and sits in one of the booths with her scratchie. Daphne
is furious when she spots her and learns that she spent the whole $10 on scratchies, and Zoe explains that she didn't have enough for her bus fares and needed to find a quick way to make some more money. She then says that she also wanted to buy a nice
bridesmaid's dress for the wedding. Daphne isn't falling for it this time, and says that she's had enough of her. Zoe goes to leave, handing over one of the scratchies with $2 on it, saying that she'll pay the rest back when she has it. Daphne takes
pity on her and tells her to sit down and have a coffee, and Zoe starts scratching off the rest of the cards, suddenly handing one of them over to Daphne and telling her to check it. A delighted Daphne tells Zoe that she's just won $1000 and the two
women dance around the shop, much to the amusement of the only other customer.
No 26: Madge calls by, looking for Helen for a chat, but finds Jim working on his car jack. He asks if she wants to stay and talk to him - so she makes herself a
cup of tea and admits that the problem is that she's missing her kids. Jim admits that he's missing Scott whilst he's away touring Australia, and then Madge starts dropping hints about how Max doesn't seem to care about Danny. Jim then tells her about
the jack and how it might be about to solve all of the family's problems, and Madge is very impressed. She says that he should be out celebrating, and suggests that they go and have lunch together.
. . .
Daphne's Coffee Shop: Jim and Madge sit down, and Daphne comes over to take their order. Jim tells Daphne about the sale of the car jack, and that they're celebrating,
though Madge looks uncomfortable. Once Daphne's taken their order and gone, Madge says that Daphne's quite a pleasant girl - despite her background.
No 24: Shane answers the door to Zoe, and he's not very pleased to see her. She says that she needs to talk to him about something, but first, she wants him to
know that she isn't a bad person, but she just gets carried away sometimes. She explains that she did steal his wallet, because she was desperate and he looked like he was rich. Shane points out that he isn't rich, and that he lost his driver's
licence and bank cards, along with $300. Zoe then gives him back his wallet, with the missing money replaced, and says that she hopes that this proves that she's not really that bad. She asks if they can be friends now - Shane isn't too sure, but
Zoe kisses him on the cheek and leaves.
. . .
Daphne's Coffee Shop: Daphne is taste-testing her chocolate cake, when Zoe comes in, having just bought a bridesmaid's dress. She hands over the $100 she
owes for board and rent, plus the $10 she borrowed that morning. Daphne is impressed, and tells Zoe to sit down and she'll bring her some of the cake. As Daphne walks over to the table, she's shocked to find Zoe emptying dozens of scratchies
from her bag. Zoe doesn't see it as that big of a deal, and asks Daphne to sit down and help. Daphne smiles and joins her.
Ramsay Street - No 24 Balcony: Danny is putting on his best suit, and tells Shane that he's got his computer course that afternoon, and he wants Marcie
to see him looking his best. Shane says that he's happy to see Danny so serious about this girl, and he hopes that it works out for them. Danny then explains that he's feeling guilty, because he lied to Max about the money in his wallet,
claiming that he got it from gambling, when he actually earned it by working for Clive. Danny realises that he was supposed to stop lying to Max, but he knows that he'd hit the roof if he found out about the job with Clive. Shane suggests
that Danny could just give up on Marcie, then he wouldn't need all of this extra money, but Danny says that he'd do anything for Marcie - even dress up as a pumpkin.
No 24: Madge is on the phone, trying to find out why her recent prison visit was rejected. She hangs up the phone, disappointed, but quickly composes
herself as Shane and Danny walk in. She spots Shane with his wallet and tells him not to leave it lying around - then asks him where he got all that money. He says that he got it from 'hustling around' and Madge isn't amused, so he admits
that a friend paid him back some money that he was owed. She notices Danny laughing and says that she isn't sure whether to believe either of them, and that it's very difficult when you lose someone's trust. As Madge leaves the room,
Shane says that she seems quite upset, but Danny says that it serves her right for snooping on them.
Daphne's Coffee Shop: Daphne starts to get angry as she and Zoe come to the end of the pile of tickets, and find that she's only won $20 from the $400
she spent. The customers all start to look over as Daphne tells Zoe that she's useless, and Zoe agrees, saying that she only stayed around so she could go to Daphne's wedding. Zoe says that she wishes that she had someone who loved her as
much as Des loves Daphne, and she goes to leave, but Daphne stops her and says that they can't just part ways like this, as they're best friends. Zoe sits back down and the customers all start to clap and cheer.
. . .
No 24: Madge is rushing to answer the phone, but Max beats her to it, and is furious when the caller asks him how much he charges for a gorilla. He
hangs up, and Madge says that it must have been a wrong number. Max, however, thinks that Clive got one of his mates to call and wind him up on purpose. He's about to go and confront Clive, but Madge stops him and says that she's been
working for Clive, taking calls for his business. Max warns her that she has to stop and he won't have it under his roof, but Madge says that she won't be threatened in this house - as she does own it, after all.
