Ralph Drew 1987

When a man arrived in Ramsay Street and asked the postie where the Robinson family lived, little did he realise the terror this man would bring for Helen Daniels. The man, Ralph Drew, returned that afternoon and found Helen alone. Masquerading as a vicar named Errol Price, he explained that he had worked at the detention centre where Terry Robinson had been sent for murdering Charles Durham. He told Helen of how close he’d grown to Terry and of the terrible guilt he had experienced when she’d killed herself.

“Reverend Price” then asked Helen to take him to Terry’s grave, so that he could say goodbye and begin to move on. Helen agreed, and left a note for her family, but while she was getting her bag, “Errol” quickly got rid of it. Once at the cemetary, the Reverend started acting oddly, talking to Terry about all of his regrets. Helen realised that something was very wrong, and she tried to leave, but the man stopped her, and said that he couldn’t let her go home.

Once the Robinson family became aware that Helen was missing, they also grew suspcious of the vicar who had begun to hang around and offer his support. When “Errol” returned to Ramsay Street the day after Helen’s disappearance, he was caught by Mrs Mangel, who needed a shoulder to cry on following her husband leaving. After finally escaping her clutches, he went to see the Robinsons. However, Paul, who was convinced that this wasn’t the same Reverend Price that he’d met at the detention centre, did a little digging around and learnt that the real Errol Price was 52 and away on holiday. So, while Jim kept “Errol” occupied, Paul went to the Ramsay house and asked Shane to follow the man once he left, in the hope that he might lead him to Helen.

Caught up in the excitement, Charlene decided to join her cousin. However, once they got around the corner, “Errol” got into a car. Shane and Charlene were forced to hail a taxi, in which they followed him to the graveyard. They watched as he went into an old shed. Inside, he was just about to murder Helen when Shane burst in. “Errol” managed to get out of the door and escape, but as he started to run away, Charlene struck him on the head with a shovel. Once the police were involved, it was revealed that the man was Ralph Drew, an ex-boyfriend of Terry’s with mental problems. Whilst in a mental home, he’d become obsessed with Terry and having learnt of her suicide, he decided to get revenge on the man he blamed – Paul Robinson – by making him worry and suffer. Helen soon recovered from her ordeal, while Drew was never heard of again.
