Bernie Sutton 1985
Lived: 30 Ramsay Street
Parents: Jan and Bob Sutton

After being given a new BMX bike by his parents, Bernie Sutton became something of a menace to the residents of Ramsay Street, causing particular concern to neighbour Jim Robinson. As he drove into the street one day, Jim was shocked to see Bernie heading straight at him and was unable to stop in time. Fortunately, Bernie was unharmed and, when confronted, his father Bob explained that he had taught Bernie to ride towards oncoming traffic as it was safer. Although Jim attempted to re-educate the boy by giving him some road safety pamphlets, Bob stepped in and told him to mind his own business. A couple of weeks later, Bernie was knocked down and killed whilst riding towards a truck on the main road. After his funeral, the local primary school arranged for some road safety lessons, and Bob apologised to Jim for the way he’d spoken to him.
