Martin West 2001
Occupation: Editor of The Chronicle Newspaper

As editor of The Chronicle newspaper, Martin West interviewed Libby Kennedy about the position of youth affairs reporter. After an impromptu meeting at Lou’s pub, where Libby spoke about her passion for youth issues, Martin offered her the job, and said that he would phone his secretary to get the contract drawn up, before leaving for an overseas trip. Just as Martin was leaving, they were joined by Libby’s husband, Drew, who happened to let slip that his wife was pregnant. A few days later, Libby found out that the job had gone to someone else, and she decided to sue, realising that it had only been due to the fact that she was pregnant. Although it looked like she was going to get nowhere, since it had only been a verbal agreement, Martin’s secretary, Nancy Kelloway, met up with Libby in secret and gave her two emails which proved that her pregnancy had been the reason for his change of mind. Libby was given an out-of-court settlement which she used to start up her own magazine.
