Following the breakdown of his marriage to Maria, Max Ramsay moved out of his home on Ramsay Street and into a single room bedsit. The room had one window and a small kitchen area along one wall, a payphone just outside the door, and a bathroom at the end of the corridor. Max lived there on his own for a few months, but was later joined by his son, Shane, who decided that he should support his father during the divorce. When Maria moved to Hong Kong with new boyfriend Richard Morrison, Max and Shane moved back to Ramsay Street, to look after younger Ramsay son, Danny.

Other residents who lived in the block included rude and abrupt housekeeper Mrs French, who was replaced by the far nicer Mrs Edith Harris several weeks later; Miss Logan, who had an intense distrust of Max; as well as young father Steve O'Donnel, who lived in the bedsit opposite Max with his baby daughter Christine for a short period.

As well as Mrs Harris developing a crush on him, and Miss Logan accusing him of stealing her underwear, other incidents during Max's time at the bedsits included he and his plumbing assistant Terry being held hostage by her ex-husband Gordon Miller, and Max developing a feud with Mr McLean who lived behind the block with his noisy dog.
