Magistrate John McQueen 2001, 2002
Occupation: Judge

Known as ‘The Grim Reaper’ by many a lawyer, John McQueen was a difficult judge to impress. When Toadfish Rebecchi was fired from his job as a radio show host at UniFM, and charged with insighting wreckless behaviour, since he was in his final year training as a lawyer, he chose to represent himself. Toadie had been fired because he was seen to be encouraging shoplifting when he gave the uni students tips on how to save money. When Edward Rogers, one of the students who’d been caught shoplifting, was called as a witness, Toadie pointed out that the section of the radio show had simply been a light-hearted joke and he never intended for anyone to blindly follow his advice. Fortunately, Magistrate McQueen agreed with the point and dismissed the charges, pointing out that Toadie had made an excellent case and he hoped that they would meet up in court again in the future.

The following year, Toadie’s boss Keith Cox was called to represent one of Toadie’s friends and neighbours, Matt Hancock, who had been involved in an illegal drag race. Magistrate McQueen was presiding at the bail hearing and, after hearing both sides, he decided that Matt would be charged with wreckless conduct endangering lives, and refused his request for bail.

Notes: James Cahill returned in 2003 in the guest role of Julian Day.
