Daughter to bank manager Philip Martin and his alcoholic wife Loretta, Debbie was a troubled child, who attempted to take an overdose when she found out that her parents were splitting up.
The incident led to Philip trying to make another go of things with his wife, devastating Julie Robinson, who'd been seeing Philip for several weeks. A few months later, however, Julie received word that Philip and Loretta had been involved
in a terrible car accident. She went to the hospital, where she learnt that Philip was in serious condition and Loretta was dead. Julie then went to the farm where Debbie and her brother Michael had been staying and took them home, explaining what had happened to their
parents. As Philip started to make progress, he was left unable to walk, and Julie agreed to make another try at their relationship, and so she went to stay with the Martins to help look after Philip, Debbie and Michael.
Philip and Julie later married and had a daughter of their own, Hannah. In 1992, the Martins returned to Erinsborough for the funeral of Todd Landers, and Debbie was now an intelligent, but still insecure, teenager.
