Occupation: Criminal Barrister
Criminal barrister Georgia McNamara was called on by
Paul Robinson when his son, Dr. David Tanaka, was charged with medical manslaughter and perverting the
course of justice, following the death of Gareth Bateman. Gareth’s ex-girlfriend, nurse
Freya Wozniak, was also charged with perverting the course of justice,
and was being represented by Toadie Rebecchi, so Georgia was unimpressed when she had to hold her first meeting with David whilst both Toadie and Freya were
also present. As they had paid off Oscar Russell, who had been blackmailing David and Freya for weeks, Georgia pointed out that it looked like they’d been
trying to cover their tracks, rather than feeling guilty and planning to own up to their crime.
As Georgia heard the full story - that David believed that his husband,
Aaron, had been beaten to death by Gareth, who had also just shot Freya’s boyfriend
Levi and was going to hurt her next - she said that impaired judgement due to mental trauma would be their best defence. Though David was uncomfortable
with, what he saw as, excuses for his actions, Toadie also felt that it might be the best course of action. When Georgia met with David and Freya again a
few days later, she explained that they would need psychiatric evaluations to help with the mental trauma defence. David was still unhappy with the idea,
claiming that he was too busy to attend the appointment that Georgia had arranged for him, so Freya agreed to take it instead.
Several weeks later, as David’s sentencing hearing got closer, he and Aaron took their baby daughter,
Isla, on holiday, where David enjoyed spending time
out on a boat and trying to forget his problems for a while. On the final day of the holiday, David was due to go to his bail check-in at the local police
station, but one final outing on the boat ended in disaster when it ran out of fuel and broke down. After finding some spare fuel and making it back to the
marina, the police were understanding, but when they arrived home in Erinsborough, David was taken in by the police, who had decided that he was a flight
risk. Georgia met with David at the police station, where they learnt that
Marlena, the owner of the Air B’n’B where David and Aaron had been staying, had
overheard him joking about doing a runner, disappearing on the boat and absconding. Taking this seriously, Marlena had contacted the police and, with no
way of proving what he had said was a joke - plus evidence of a search for non-extradition countries on his phone - David was deemed a flight risk and
taken into remand.
A few days later, Georgia visited Aaron to inform him that David’s remand centre was over capacity, and that he was being moved to a maximum security
prison until his sentencing hearing.
A couple of years later, it was Paul who needed Georgia’s help, when it was discovered that he’d covered up the accidental death of
Krista Sinclair at
the rooftop pool one night. Though Paul hadn’t seen the body, when he had gone to find it, he had instead found Krista’s boyfriend
Eden Shaw. Eden claimed
that he had moved the body and demanded half a million dollars from Paul for his silence. Paul agreed to go along with it, but after the truth came out,
Eden was tracked down and Krista was found to still be alive, kept captive by Eden in the basement of an abandoned house.
18 months later, it was David's brother, Leo, who was in serious trouble when the body of Sebastian Metcalfe was found floating in Lassiters Lake one
morning. Leo had just found out that his fiancee, Krista, had slept with Seb on the eve of the wedding and had walked out on their honeymoon and flown
back to Melbourne. As he arrived back at the hotel, Leo had spotted a smug Seb sitting by the lake and an argument broke out, witnessed by Aaron Brennan,
who was out for a late-night run. After Seb's body was found, Leo and Krista were both questioned, with Leo leaving out the details of his argument with Seb.
Unfortunately, Aaron was spotted on a car's dash cam and taken in for questioning, to see if he'd seen anything. Having told Leo that he'd keep quiet, Aaron
ended up cracking under the questioning of Detective Rafe Fox, and Leo became the prime suspect for Seb's murder. Paul then called in Georgia, who advised Leo
to comply with the police's request for a DNA sample. When the DNA ended up matching that found on Seb's body, Leo was formally charged with Seb's murder and
Georgia accompanied him as he was taken for a bail hearing.
With Leo's trial date then set for a couple of months later, former lawyer, and Leo's friend and business partner, Byron Stone, was taken on as a volunteer
to help out as Georgia built her case. With the police now treating Leo as their only suspect, Georgia and Byron began work on looking at other potential
suspects, gathering a list of everyone Seb had dealings with in both Sydney and Erinsborough.
